The Koss ESP-950 has been around for over 20 years, and yet it holds up when compared to the best headphones available today. This is an electrostatic design, known for it's clear and lifelike presentation. Stax, from Japan, is the leader in electrostatic headphones, but the American-made Koss compares well with the Stax Lambda line, comes with a lifetime warranty, and includes a portable amp and a calfskin carrying case for less than the cost of the Stax Lambda models. The overall presentation of ESP-950 is accurate, musical and detailed, with details apparent even at lower listening levels. The bass is slightly rolled-off, but the sound of a string bass (an instrument I used to play) is very accurate. The best sound qualities of this headphone, though, are shown in it's very sweet midrange -- this is a great headphone for vocals. I've owned the Sennheiser HD600 (a well-regarded high-end headphone), as well as the Stax Lambda Pro and I prefer the sound of the Koss ESP-950. Highly recommended!

This is an excellent headphone. With electrostatic headphones like this one, Stax, Sennheiser HE60/90, etc., you always get wonderful clarity. The sound is light, airy, and very pleasing. I often find myself turning up the volume when listening to electrostats because they don't hurt your ears as much as dynamic headphones. The trade-off is generally slightly less bass (although I wouldn't call these bass-shy), and a little less "weight" to the tone.

Are there better headphones out there? Certainly. But at this price, you won't find a better electrostat. And it comes with an amplifier included. If you want to get a taste of an electrostatic sound, but don't want to spend the big bucks for a Stax Omega II, or a Stax SR-009, this is the way to go (I find this headphone much more enjoyable than the similarly-priced) Stax Lambda series.

With my introduction to the electrostatic world via the SR-407 with SRM-252S amp, and it completely blowing me away sound-wise, I started looking to see what was sold new today for an affordable price range (head-fi affordable, not real world affordable, but I digress). The Koss ESP-950 immediately jumped out at me. Electrostatic headphone WITH an amp sometimes sold for less than $700? I HAD to check them out!

Koss is usually associated with headphones that are budget conscious, delivering great sound without breaking the bank. By now you guys probably know how much of a fanboy I am of the KSC-75 and KSC-35. I will always have at least one pair of Koss headphones in my lifetime. The Koss ESP-950 has been part of Koss's repertoire for a few decades, known for their incredibly linearity, well balanced, yet musical sound. The ESP-950 comes bundled with their E-90 electrostatic amp. It uses a proprietary headphone input, so it only works with the ESP-950. The great thing about Koss is that their well known Lifetime Warranty is also applicable here, so if for any reason these fail you, you can get them replaced/fixed by Koss directly. More companies should follow this type of business mindset. Standing behind their products for as long as you live!

Build Quality: Unfortunately, the build quality is without question, the worst build I have seen on a headphone costing more than $100. It literally feels like a $20 headphone to me. The internals could be made out of styrofoam, and I wouldn't doubt it.

Seriously, I don't know what it is, but electrostatic headphones seem to focus purely on sound quality, and not build or aesthetics (at least until you hit flagship level Stax headphones).

Comfort: one of the most comfortable headphones I used. It's very light and you barely notice its there. They won't stay on if you move around a lot. But with an energizer attached, I don't see why I would want to use for portable purposes (even with battery pack) anyways. It does get a little warm over extended period.

Build Quality: the material seem cheap. The light weight, of both energizer and headphones, doesn't inspire much confidence. Most $300 dynamic headphones have better build quality. The right earpiece develop and buzz after two days of use. I am returning it to Amazon instead of using Koss customer service, which I heard honor the lifetime warranty pretty well. I will order another one and update this review based on the replacement.

Sound quality: simply world class. Compared to Stax Lambda (407), Koss sounds a lot warmer and relax. But the airy, effortless, and grain-less qualities of electrostatic headphones are all there. After a lot of careful listening and comparison, you realize that Koss reveals almost (95%?) as much detail as the Stax, but with a more relaxed and musical presentation. I actually prefer the Koss sound and would listen to it a lot more than I did with Stax.

The ESP-950 is great, but with a lot of room for improvement in build quality and packaging department.

I bought this from Amazon in November and it went kaput in December. I since sent it back to Koss taking them up on their lifetime warrenty. I recieved a free new energizer unit. This headphone is excellent (and I own many of the top brands); Use it with a tube headphone amplifier to get best results.
