This is one of the few Bowie compilations that makes sense. Perhaps the only one that really will fit nicely into a Bowie fans Bowie collection. Because it focuses on just one period it retains a mood throughout. Most people have a favorite Bowie period or two, and this happens to be one of mine. Theres a lot of great stuff on the four albums from which these songs are taken but here you get to hear them in different company, like a highlight reel of the 76-79 period. V-2 Schneider followed by TVC 15 is a great way to start any listening session. Then the German version of Heroes and Boys Keep Swinging which has some of the wickedest guitar ever heard on a Bowie song. Then the quiet interlude of Sense of Doubt which fades out into the long train intro to Station to Station(live), a great version. Then the studio version of Look Back in Anger and a great version of Stay and another fade out into the moody Warszawa. My only complaint is that this intersting cycle doesn't keep going. Its over too quick. But the good thing is that you get to hear songs you already know in this unusual order which for once on a compilation disc makes a lot of pleasing good sense. Perhaps the movie should get credit for this, the movies heroine is a Bowie fan and these are her favorites and that gives this collection a personality lacking in other collections. Much better than the professionally selected and marketed packages which are never very good. Maybe future Bowie compilations will learn from this approach. The best is to own all of Bowies 76-79 CD's, but this is a worthy second best and a great intro to those who want to get to know this period.

"Christiane F" is a true story, based on an autobiography entitled "Christiane F: Kinder der Bahnhof Zoo." The film shows Christiane's descent into heroin addiction and prostitution in startling detail. In the book, Christiane tells of her fondness for Bowie's music and how excited she was to see him perform in concert. Bowie himself contributed to the film in the form of soundtrack selections. Gleaned from the so-called "Berlin Trilogy" of "Low," "Heroes" and "Lodger" for the most part, this is one of the best collections of mid-70's Bowie available. A couple of tracks are from "Station to Station," including a live version of that album's title piece which is used for the concert footage segment of the film. I recommend this album highly, both as an excellent selection of songs but also as a good way to hear some of Bowie's more experimental work (productions by Brian Eno were a trademark of the "Berlin Trilogy").

Granted I am tainted by a nostalgic flashbacks to the first time I saw the Christiane F. movie when it was first released in Germany. Sure most of the songs are contained on other albums. If you are a true Bowie fan though, you will enjoy the compilation of songs and their order. If you are a Bowie collector, you will own the first CD with the Hereos/Helden song: an absolute Bowie classic. Plus the movie shots in the insert are worth owning the CD.

During the summer of 1982, I read the eponymous harrowing story of a teen heroin addict prostitute in Berlin named Christiane F. A while later, I came across the soundtrack album and bought it not knowing much about David Bowie's work at all but relying on the young girl's adoration. It was a perfect soundtrack to the dark themes of the autobiography and fast took on that same role in my life. Few songs captured the angst of that period of my life as perfectly as the haunting "Sense of Doubt."

Decades later and living in Japan, I was surprised to come across the cd version of the album and picked it up without hesitation. By that time I had become a Bowie fan, particularly of the Berlin era of his output. Even though I had most of the tracks on this recording, it was worth picking this up for the German-English version of "Heroes/Helden" and the live version of "Station to Station" as well as the new liner notes which detail the story as well as a track-by-track analysis. The version of "Heroes" is still my favorite because the German language seems to give an even greater emotional quality to the lyrics.

This soundtrack is an excellent primer for a period in Bowie's history that features some of his most personal and bleak compositions and I will always think fondly of it for leading me to David Bowie.

Never saw the movie. Read reviews and figure that if the soundtrack contained on this disc is relevant to the flick, then I would probably find the film interesting. A vinyl promo copy of this disc came into my possession 30+ years ago ( I own a small record store. Yes, I am really that old.) This soundtrack with edited mid-period David Howie performances has been on my CD Wish List for decades. If you are a real Howie fan you already have all these toons in their unedited forms, in other collections. If you like the odd, offbeat, quirky, or foreign, then you ought to try this offering. If you are a Howie completing, then you must obtain this disc.

This is an excellent compilation drawing from David Bowie's 1970's Berlin-era work. Bowie has released way too many greatest hits packages in the last 15 years and this set really stands apart from those in that Christiane F mines what is arguably his most creative and influential period for album track gems that would never have been released as singles.
This is the only place I know to go for the Heroes / Helden, English / German, hybrid (its nifty).
