Amazon.com Review

NCAA Football 2002 takes the same graphics, gameplay, and physics engines as Madden 2002 and adds the unmistakable feel of college football. The game plays exactly like Madden with slight improvements to the already strong graphics. You can choose from 144 NCAA teams (117 Division 1-A and 27 Division 1-AA) and compete in one of the 26 postseason bowl games, complete with corporate sponsors (FedEx Orange Bowl). Stat junkies are sure to love this game; in addition to the usual performance stats, it keeps track of AP top 25, coach's top 25, BCS rankings, All-American awards, and more.

As mentioned earlier, the gameplay is identical to Madden's. It has a high degree of realism that purists will enjoy, but fans of faster, arcade-style games might not care for. This is one of the few games that uses every button on the PlayStation2 controller--casual gamers might be intimidated by the complex controls. Also like Madden, there are a number of unstoppable plays that can nullify any defense. From a technical standpoint, this game doesn't offer enough improvements to warrant its purchase if you already own Madden. However, if you don't own Madden or love college football, this is the game to buy. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • Sharp presentation
  • Extremely realistic gameplay
  • A deluge of statistics to track
Cons:
  • Complex controls
  • A few cheap, unstoppable plays
  • Too slow for fans of arcade sports games

5.0 out of 5 stars Got the game. Hope to keep both job and wife., July 26, 2001
By A Customer
I waited most of a year to get this game. It's the whole reason I paid some guy in Canada a fortune for a PS2. Playing it made all that waiting worth it. I'm now guiding my beloved Crimson Tide to the SEC Championship and beyond with awesome, Madden 2001-esque graphics, a much more fluid gameplay than NCAA 2001 and bells and whistles that make it playable well into next season.

My favorite heightened aspect of the game is recruiting. The recruiting mode is deeper and occupies a larger share of the total package. Visit all the Blue Chips you want, and even if it looks like they're headed your way, it's no guarantee - just like in real life.

Great game. The most comprehensive college football title ever. If EA Sports keeps this kind of performance up, they'll be including a helmet and jersey in next year's game box.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is the best football game ever made, hands down!, October 29, 2001
By A Customer
When I bought this game a few weeks ago I was expecting a pretty good game but when I turned it on and started playing I was blown away. First of all the graphics were ridiculous! The detail is amazing. Another cool feature that many people don't know is that if you go to the edit players menu in Rosters you can name all the players! For instance I went in and named all the big name players from college and surprisingly the announcers will actually call out their names! Eric Crouch,Ken Dorsey,Chris Simms you name it! It really adds some personality to the game. I also found the computer on the ALL-American level to be a real challenge, I haven't stopped playing this game yet. The Dynasty Mode is very deep. Recruiting if your not a major college power is challenging. I played with North Carolina and won the National Championship and still could only get 8 of 30 players recruited to commit. You'll notice the dropoff in talent on the field too when your new player's have come in right away and start. ...I'm in year three of my dynasty and they still haven't won more than 5 games in a season. Other than that the AI is exceptional. This game comes highly recommended! Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Football game on the market...period!, August 15, 2001
By daniel ward "dan.ward@janus.com" (arvada, CO United States) - See all my reviews
I cannot believe some of the nit-picking going on here. Yes, on the sidelines the players walk through chairs. And that happens how many times? The fact is, there's so much detail in this game and the gameplay itself is incredible. This is not Madden 2001 -- the defense is much, much better. I have to actualy play run-stop defense (4-3, 4-4. 5-2, etc.) instead of playing nickle and dime coverage just to try and slow down the opposing team's passing game and lackluster running game. The captured motion is fantastic: a bullet pass over a jumping linebacker who is falling back into coverage and in front of the safety to a receiver who slides to his knees in order to catch the pass -- just for example -- is amazing. That's great stuff! I've played video football games for several years and this is the best I've ever seen. The people who are criticizing this game will never be satisfied, in my humble opinion. If you love football games and for some reason are hesitating on whether or not to pick this game up -- don't. Buy it. Trust me.
