Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

How long has it been since Paul Hogan's grizzled but charming alter ego appeared in a new movie? Well, long enough for the character, Crocodile Dundee, and his American companion, Sue Charleton (Hogan's real-life wife, Linda Kozlowski), to have raised a 9-year-old son, Mikey (Serge Cockburn), in the rough-and-tumble Australian outback that Dundee calls home. As with its two predecessors, however, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles is no domestic comedy but a fish-out-of-water comic adventure, this time finding Dundee and his mate Jacko (Alec Wilson) relocated in balmy Southern California to help journalist Sue investigate a crooked studio executive. The jokes are predictable (L.A. traffic, Hollywood phonies, yoga) but fun, anyway, and there are some celebrity cameos to spice things up. Australian director Simon Wincer, who worked with Hogan on Lightning Jack, is very effective at keeping this light material briskly moving along even if he can't make it any more memorable than it has a right to be. All in all, this is a pleasant but forgettable experience, a far cry from the Capra-esque leanings of Hogan's first screen outing as Crocodile Dundee. --Tom Keogh

4.0 out of 5 stars Mick is back., May 18, 2001
By tvtv3 "tvtv3" (Sorento, IL United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
After thirteen years in limbo, Mick "Crocodile" Dundee is back. This was a really enjoyable movie that everyone in my family enjoyed watching. The picture provides lots of laughs and the story works rather well.

Mick and the love of his life, Sue, have a son together and are living in Mick's home territory of the Australian Outback. However, a publisher at a Los Angeles newspaper that Sue's father owns suddenly dies and her father temporarily offers her the position until a permanent replacement can be found. Surprisingly, Mick agrees and they move to LA. Once there, Sue begins to investigate the sudden death of the previous publisher and Mick goes undercover at a movie studio.

The critics blasted this film, but like many of the movies they review, they are way off target. The film is funny and family oriented. The plot is more believable than many big budgeted affairs and there is very little violence and no sleaze. The only major drawback about the movie is that it has been thirteen years since the last Crocodile Dundee film. The movie fits well within the trilogy, but since it has been so long since the last movie was in theatres, much of the movie's humor is lost on the audience (there are several references to Mick's character or things that happened previously, something you don't know much about unless you've seen the other films; this is an 80's type comedy with a modern sensibility, but if you've never seen an 80's comedy much of the humor will be lost). Overall, a delightful film that the entire family can enjoy; well worth your time and money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A charming comedy for the whole family..., April 23, 2001
By "matts1979@webtv.net" (Leominster, MA) - See all my reviews

Paul Hogan returns 13 years after the last 'Crocodile' Dundee film and surprisingly still provides enough comedy and charm for several movies.

'Crocodile' Dundee in Los Angeles is a pretty funny movie, it's also the most family oriented film out of the Croc trilogy. It's funny, but never violent or sleazy. Essentially it's another 'fish out of water' story, but Paul Hogan's Mick Dundee is such a fun character to watch and an easy one to like that the lack of an original story doesn't detract too much from the proceedings.

It's been 13 years since Dundee II, Mick and girlfriend Sue Charlton reside in Austrailia's Walkabout Creek with their son. Mick still runs Never, Never tours and Sue is still a reporter for her father's newspaper. When the editor of the LA branch dies, Sue's father asks her to take over operation in LA until a permanent replacement can be found. Sue agrees to do it and Mick agrees to come along and take their son...before you know it, it's off to LA.

There's not much originality in the script, but it moves along fast enough and provides enough laughs...there are several funny moments in the film (especially the freeway bit) and the kid is surprsingly cute. If you've seen the previous two films, you know what to expect. What makes this film work, especially as an aimable family flick, is the charm and warmth of it. It's not overly sappy, but a character like Dundee is one that children will get a kick out of, because his misadventures are amusing and a little silly. Parents won't mind their kids watching because Mick is a character that gets along with people and sees the good in them...it's an uncommon theme to find in today's 'family' films, but one that parents will appreciate their kids learning.

Don't listen to the critics when making up your mind to see this film, they've been way off base. 'Crocodile' Dundee in Los Angeles is a funny, charming movie. One that parents can enjoy because it's legitimately funny, and one that parents won't mind showing their kids for the same reasons and also because it's good, honest and clean fun.

Can't wait for this trilogy on DVD, it's a must add to your collection!

3.0 out of 5 stars Utterly forgettable: what movie am I reviewing again?, June 5, 2002
By C. B. Newman "moodindigo2" (Brisbane, QLD Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Hopefully, Crocodile Dundee In L.A. is not Paul Hogan's swan song for the Dundee series. Paul's previous films to this name are much more inspired in plot, montage, and acting. In this film, Hogan seems to be along for the ride, and for this I blame the direction and screenwriting which is listless and dull. Mind you, CD in LA is not a bad film by any means, nor is it memorable. But there is a sense that Hollywood is merely attempting to cash in on the Dundee character and not use Hogan as the charming, affible actor that he is.

Alas, poor Paul Hogan, I knew him well, and miss him in this film. Was it to pay for Linda Kozlowski's plastic surgery, or has Paul Hogan truly lost his bearings in a foreign land? The setting of Los Angeles must have been a dream come true for the Studio execs who signed off on the funding for the film, and the Aussie actors seem to enjoy themselves well enough in the city of Angels. Yet, the jokes, and the humor in Southern California lifestyle is tired. Zzzzzz.

Wait for the next film in the series. Hopefully ole' Lightning Jack will be back in his true form by then.
