First off I have to say Midnight Star and Atlantic Star ARE NOT the same group! They may dress alike and have similar cover art but couldn't be more different.Anyway 'Headlines' is the last Midnight Star album featuring the brothers Calloway and it shows. The material here bears more similarity to that of Ready For The World and other mid 80's dance-funk groups, notably on the two best songs 'Midas Touch' and 'Engine Number 9'.The styles vary though from hard edged electro-funk to dance-pop and THAT'S what made the Calloway's so great-they could have a distinctive sound AND be diverse all at once.I don't think I'll get any arguements here that Midnight Star lost most of it's individuality after this album and this is the last time most fans will find their music of any interest. So happy listening!

I LOVE MIDNIGHT STARR WHAT AN ALBUM!!!
I REMEMBER WHEN MY MOM USED TO LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM I USED TO LIKE MIDNIGHT STAR. I USED TO LIKE ALL OF THESE SONGS THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS THEY HAVE; BESIDES" NO PARKING ON THE DANCE FLOOR". THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM THAT CONTAINS SOME GOOD SONGS "GET DRESSED" IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. I LOVE THE MIDAS TOUCH AND ENGINE NO.9. WHAT A TREAT THIS IS A GOOD ALBUM AND I WOULD RECOMMEND ANYONE WHO LIKES MIDNIGHT STARR TO BUY THIS ALBUM. IT IS A GOOD ONE!!!!!

In what would be the group's last effort with members as well as brothers Reggie and Vincent Calloway, who later as powerhouse producers penned mega-hits for Natalie Cole, Teddy Pendergrass, LeVert and Gladys Knight, only to achieve phenomenal success all their own with the smash "I Wanna Be Rich," Midnight Star ultimately delivers another blockbuster smash. Achieving gold status, the album's title and rap influenced single of the same name as well as the funky hypnotic "Midas Touch," both became bonafied Top 10 R&B hits while the essential "Engine No. 9" found an instant spot in the Top 20. Though never released as singles, the sultry "Stay Here By My Side" and the breathtaking "Close to Midnight" are pure listenable pleasures, making 'Headlines' a definite front page story to rave about.

As already noted, this was the last Midnight Star album before the departure of the Calloway Brothers. The wear and tear on the chemistry of the group was apparent inasmuch as most of the material for this album just didn't fire the imagination as the previous albums did .... with the notable exceptions of "MIDAS TOUCH" & "ENGINE #9"!

Now ordinarily, only 2 5-star quality singles wouldn't carry an entire CD in my book but these two singles did. And while "HEADLINES" may have put the CD on the charts, that song IMO was a mere afterthought compared to the production done on "MIDAS TOUCH" & "ENGINE #9". Matter of fact those two singles would have sounded more at home on Midnight Star's previous CD "PLANETARY INVASION". "ENGINE #9" featured Melvin Gentry on lead vocals which was a very nice departure from the songs led by Bo Watson and Belinda Lipscomb. Additionally, the stinging guitar solo/riff in the middle of this song ... is funk virtuosity at its finest!

I've had the good fortune to have seen the group perform these songs live back in their heyday and they didn't disappoint!

"MIDAS TOUCH" is still on their playlist as they make appearances in throwback funk venues these days, but I haven't seen them do "ENGINE #9" in awhile ... they really need add that one back to their show! For fans of the group, I would suggest that they also view the profile of Midnight Star on the TV ONE network series "UNSUNG"; it'll have you coming to buy these songs if you haven't already!

I wish that if Midnight Star were to perform here, I love to go and see them. I think that they were one of the best bands during their times. If only they made more albums.
