Mood music has gotten a bad name. Mood music is not elevator music, not smooth jazz, not muzak. Here two albums of great, lyrical, slow cooking jazz are offered from the first of Cal Tjader's career and at the end of his Fantasy label years. Tjader is muy simpatico through out plus these great standards feature, as they always do with Tjader, terrific sidemen. When talents like pianist Hank Jones get featured you know you can not go wrong. Very fine folks.

At first, this package of previously released sessions from the vinyl age appears to be quite an odd pairing.
Though the reasons for compiling a session from 1951 along with another from 1977 (and Tjader recorded tons of albums between these 2 sessions) is simply because 1) They had not been re-issued yet onto CD, 2) They can both fit in full on a single CD without leaving any tracks off from the original issues, and 3) These are actually the very 1st and last sessions that Tjader ever recorded for the Fantasy/Galaxy label.
So, although the music various stylistically between the 2 sessions, they are very much both worthwhile, even if the 'flow' from one to the next is slightly odd, having 26 years of musical and technological changes between them.
The 1st 8 tracks were recorded in 3 different sessions between August-November 1951 and were originally released as "The Cal Tjader Trio" (a 10-inch LP) with:
1-4: Cal Tjader:Vibes, Drums, Bongos, Jack Weeks:Bass, Vince Guaraldi:Piano
5-8: Cal Tjader:Vibes, Drums, Jack Weeks:Bass, John Marabuto:Piano
These are naturally very acoustic-oriented affairs. The following album from 1977 is a bit more of an electric affair.
Tracks 9-14 comprise an album originally titled "Breathe Easy" recorded in September 1977, released on LP in 1978:
Cal Tjader:Vibes, Allen Smith:Trumpet, Hank Jones:Acoustic & Electric Pianos, Monty Budwig:Upright & Electric Basses,
And Shelly Manne:Drums. Hell of a band there!!!
Although it is a bit of a leap from the 1951 to the 1977 selections, this is still highly recommended and nice to have available on CD.

This is Vince Guaraldi's "first recordings" and it's amazing how good he was way back in 1951. Obviously Vince is much more than just the pianist that helped make the Peanuts one of the most memorable, heartfelt, inspiring shows of all time; he was a true Be-Bop jazz pianist. In the same league as Red Garland but even more original and so full of emotion.

Also give due credit to Cal Tjader for inspiring Vince with his awesome Latin/Jazz creation.

Music from the 1960's fits well today.
