This 3" spindle assembly is substantially larger, and heavier than the standard spindles which comes with the Jet Benchtop Osciallating spindle sander. The advantage to having a larger drum is that it creates a flatter surface where the crown meets with the wood. That creates a smoother surface on larger pieces. The smaller spindles that come with the unit, range from the 2" on down to the smallest ones, which are great for getting into smaller corners etc, but on a large flat or gradual curved surface they can create dimples in the surface if you don't keep the material moving.
Is the 3" spindle neccessary? Not really, with a careful technique, you can accomplish it with the smaller spindles, but it definitely makes it easier. Highly recommended.

Ordered the 3" Jet Spindle from Amazon after looking at a number of other sources. All sources pair the spindle with a table insert and call it a kit. However, Amazon's supplier seems to feel it is legitimate to omit the insert even though they use exactly the same picture and description as all other sources of this product. Amazon, of course, claims to be only a by-stander to the whole process. Netx time I will simply buy from a legitimate Jet dealer such as Woodcraft.

This kit gives you a whole different range of capability with your Jet sander. Take this kit, put your sander on a stable tool stand, and then pat yourself on the back for the money you saved by not buying a floor model sander. With this kit, your sander tackles a much broader range of tasks.
I highly recommend it!

When sanding smooth, flowing curves (like the curvature in a bandsawn box, for instance), the added diameter of this piece keeps the sander from gouging troughs in your workpiece.

Did not include jet 3" table insert. Have to go elsewhere to get the insert. Would have been less expensive to have purchased both items together elsewhere. Amazon usually good about watching for this kind of thing, but missed it on this one. Of course you would assume "assembly" included the insert when it does wit other vendors. Very disappointed as a Prime customer. I expect to be protected from this sort of thing by Amazon Prime.

As the other reviewers have indicated, despite what the picture shows, it doesn't include the metal insert for the table. The insert has to be purchased elsewhere-I got mine from Jet. The spindle with insert is therefore pricey but definitely useful for more sweeping curves. I guess it wasn't included with the machine to keep the price down somewhat. I've found sleeves in 60/100/150 grits from less expensive sources than Jet.

I just received my spindle assembly and was very impressed with it. In fact I agree with most of the other reviews. It seems to be well made and has a good feel to it.

However, when I unpacked it, I looked for the missing table insert. After research, I discovered it is optional.

While I admit the table insert is optional for larger pieces, most of us are safety conscience and wouldn't consider working with something that put our hands in danger. It is my opinion that the table insert is worth the ten bucks. I recommend you order one as well. (Jet 709539)

Same quality as the other spindles. Note that this doesn't come with the face plate. Do not understand why the face plate isn't included with the 3" spindle option.

Bought through Amazon at Acme Tool. They were really knowledgeable to know that you had to get the face place as a replacement part and was able to order the "replacement part" through them. The face plate only has a round hole option, no slotted option part for angled sanding. The Jet part number is 709539 (for the round plate). You can find the part number on the back page of the owner's manual.
