I saw Chris play a small venue many years ago in Santa Cruz as part of a benefit for the Christic Institute (remember them?). I was about knocked out of my seat as much by her music as by her...being... I guess.
A few weeks ago, wandering through a music store, I decided to take a listen to her new CD. I must have stood there for a half hour. Bought the CD and it hasn't been out of the player since.
I'd characterize it as very musical without being overproduced. The production seems clean and true to the spirit of the compositions. I really love the way her musical stylings range all over the place.
My sister who is more aware of Chris explained all the autobiographical background. The CD plays just as well without knowing all of that and it somehow reduced the experience of the music for me. ... but that's probably just me...
Way to go Chris. So glad you're still out there lighting the world with your fugitive mind...

Cris' new CD is, in my view, her best ever. From the soulful "Cry, Cry, Cry" to the upbeat "Blue Weekend", she sings from the heart about a personal painful loss. She rebounds on the same CD with the hope of new love and a renewed happy and fulfilled life (just over the horizon) with upbeat "Lucky Dog" and a touching song titled "Two Doors". Every song on this CD is a winner. "Ashes" is just another example of that "age" old saying, Cris is not getting older, she is just getting better, better, and better.... "

This CD is a true work of art! Listeners are taken on Cris' personal journey from the depths of despair and heartbreak, through anger and acceptance, to stepping fully back into life again. Though the lyrics are personal, the emotions are universal and immediately recognizable. Fans of Cris Williamson will not be disappointed, and those new to her music would do well to make this their first piece in what will undoubtedly become a large collection. Once this music seeps into a person's soul, the need to hear more of this woman's remarkable music is unstoppable. Though it is difficult to choose favorites from the 12 very diverse songs, the title cut "Ashes" with its uncanny relevance to recovering from the recent terrorist attacks, and "Cry, Cry, Cry" performed in beautiful harmony with Bonnie Raitt, are two top contenders. Cris has given all music fans a real gift here - don't miss it!

This CD is vintage Cris Williamson. Every song is well crafted and memorable. She *is* like a phoenix rising from the ashes and a light to follow through the darkness. She has created songs that mine the depths of the human heart, and I can't stop playing the CD. I can't stop singing the songs. I can't stop humming the tunes. I can't stop thinking about the themes of life and death, rebirth and change. Whether you are a longtime fan of Cris's music or a newcomer, this CD offers solace and hope for troubled times. Besides, you can't help but sing along because the melodies are beautiful. This new offering from Cris gets my highest recommendation.

"ashes" is by far the best album i have heard this year. by any artist.
the lyrics are intelligent, compelling, heartfelt, personal but universal as well, and therefore the songs go straight to the heart. the music is equally good and the production is perfect because it never overshadows the songs. the music is the most important thing here, not some slick and polished mainstream production. and once you have heard some of those hooks and melodies you can't get them out of your head.
i am grateful for cris williamson and her contributions to the music and the world in general. this woman rocks! :)

Ashes is, without a doubt, a breath-taking, beautiful tribute to the growth of an individual. Each and every song is amazing and spell-binding, pulling me in further and further. Each time I hear a song I seem to gleen deeper meaning. I'd be hard pressed to come up with a favorite track on the cd as they all seem to speak to my soul is very different, yet very direct ways. Cris Williamson is a true story teller who spins tales with words and music.
You absolutely will not regret adding this cd to your collection.

Cris has done it once again! She is a true master at taking the human emotions we all deal with and setting them to music. This CD is a must have in these trying times. She so beautifully expresses the loss we all feel and the hope we all have for the future. Don't miss 'The Little Room', a wonderful memorial for us all as we are 'forever changed'. Add this to your collection and play it often!

Wow! For the broken-hearted, this is good medicine. For the strong-hearted this is an opportunity to experience what others are feeling. For all of us who stumble around wondering what's next....this is all about hope, survival, and taking the next step upwards. We all fall into one category or another, so I'd say this CD has meaning to everybody...definitely a must-have.
