Yeesh. The dead guy from Weekend at Bernie's is back for the gratuitous sequel, still flopping around in his lifelessness like a wet noodle and getting dragged, stuck, bumped, and subjected to all manner of undignified things the living would never tolerate. Jonathan Silverman and Andrew McCarthy return as hapless businessmen who flee to the Virgin Islands after being accused of embezzlement. For reasons we won't go into, they need Bernie's corpse to get out of a jam. McCarthy is annoyingly mannered, Silverman is on auto-pilot, and the visual jokes--all based on one form of desecration or another--do not strike any resonant black-comedy chords. --Tom Keogh

This time, insurance clerks Larry (McCarthy) and Richard (Silverman) return to work after their originalweekend with Bernie (Kiser), only to discover they've been fired. And the $2 million Bernie stole from the company is stashed in the Virgin Islands. Ever resourceful, these two party animals head to the Caribbean, where a voodoo priestess resurrects Bernie from the dead so he can lead her to the money. With an insurance investigator (Barry Bostwick) on their tails, a voodoo spell on their heads and a beautiful islander (Troy Beyer) at their side, Larry and Richard go for the gold...and discoverthat sometimes you're better off dead!

This is a movie that you won't want to miss a second of. I think it's actually better than the first one. It's hilariously funny and is a necessary film for a well selected collection.

WAB2 was not quite as enjoyable as the classic original. This is mainly due to the fact that Bernie, being a corpse for the entire film, is a cipher--little more than a prop. The physical comedy is still there (keeping WAB2 from being a total waste), but I wish we could have had more of Bernie BEFORE he died (perhaps a flashback sequence). His cantankerous (pre-death) behavior in the first WAB cracked me up. Terry Kisor is a talented actor (see his performance in "Friday the 13th Part VII, the New Blood"), so I can only hope they would consider making "Weekend at Bernie's: Episode One" which would expand on what Bernie was like when he was still alive. They obviously can't make another sequel; Bernie would be pretty decomposed by now.

This movie is super cheesy. I only bought it because I had Bernie's I, which is much better. They almost made a Bernie's III, but it got lost in, what they call, "development hell."

I have a feeling that if they indeed made a Bernie's III, it'd be worse than the II. Don't buy it. Rent it and make a copy.
