With both my husband and I having a background in science, we really like to encourage "toys" like this for our son.

After reading some of the negative reviews, I started to worry that this product would not be very good. But let me address some of the concerns:

-Yes, this is much bigger than a traditional ant farm. It has a front part to it as you can see where you don't put any sand. If you follow the directions, you only put sand in the back. Some reviewers were upset that they said their ants would only stay in the front part. I suspect some of these reviewers wrote their review prematurely. You need to give your ants about 24 full hours to get "settled." The manual says that they will be "lazy" upon arrival. They definitely huddle around the front part, and I started to worry that they wouldn't figure out where to dig. Give it time- they will.

-The top opening part, at first, does not seem as secure as one would want with ants. But I have realized it is not a problem. The ants they send you are large harvester ants. They will not get through if you keep the lid shut. With that said, I've also never seen the ants climb to the top (it seems that plastic is very slippery). The manual does warn that sometimes ants put their excess sand in a pile by the opening, and so you may have to use the sand stick (enclosed with it) to push the sand to the side. We have not had that happen.

-Advice: When you get the manual, you will get the mailer to order ants. Yes, it is an extra $4 or $7 (depending on how many ants you select), but it is that way with many ant farm products. It took us about 4 weeks to get ours so plan accordingly. I HIGHLY SUGGEST the large size of ants (it sends 50) because this is a large product.Read more ›

We bought this ant hill at the Imaginarium and ordered the ants with the prepaid form. When the ants arrived the majority of them were dead with only ten out of fifty survived the trip to Alaska. I immediately emailed the company and didn't hear back from them. A week later another set of ants arrived. It would have been nice to have a reply to the email but they were very quick in sending the replacement ants at no charge. Both my kids, 5 and 2 years old, love to watch them digging their tunnels and talking about what they are up to. Unfortunately because of the cold weather for mailing our ant hill sits empty waiting for spring. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone with an interest in bugs.

Having live stinging ants in my home is definitely outside my comfort zone. That being said, this was a great product for my kids. All of them, 2 to teen loved watching the ants dig and tunnel. Even my squeamish self enjoyed watching the tunnels develop. Ants are truly amazing workers. Among the ants that arrived only two were dead. The one draw back was this. The product said the ants would live 2 to 4 weeks. They survived much longer, necessitating caring for them longer than I expected.

My son was really excited when we got this Ant Hill. We had it all set up and ready to go when the ants arrived. We put the ants in and in less than a couple of hours, more than half of the ants had somehow escaped through the bottom of the ant hill. I had ants all over my kitchen counter. I frantically tried to scoop them up, while my two children ran around screaming that the ants got out. I have to point out that in the instruction guide it indicates that "it is virtually impossible for them to escape." After this experience, I think we'll just get him a kitten. :)

My homeschooled kindergartener had such fun with this ant farm. It was the perfect size for him, and the ants were so easy to observe this way. Most of our ants arrived alive and lived for about three weeks in the ant hill. A word of caution: don't over-water them; these ants drown really easily. Learned that the hard way. :(

I followed the directions exactly as described. Ants somehow escaped through the bottom of the ant hill. After spraying the stinging ants with bug spray I was able to see one of the screws on the bottom was at an angle and not properly aligned. I was unable to get a refund because it was past the 30 day window of the date of purchase. Well it takes 2-3 weeks to get your ants in the mail after you purchase the ant hill!!! I had purchased this for my 4 kids to learn about ants since my 4 year old is terrified of them. I had hoped that this would ease her fears to educate her about ants. Instead, we reinforced her fears! We had 50 stinging ants loose in our house! I would not recommend this product to anyone. The directions specifically say "it is virtually impossible for them to escape." Well, they escaped. And not from the lid at the top. It was securely closed. Boo on amazon for no refund on a defective product.

My son received this as a gift for his 6th birthday. It is a terrible gift!! The ended up escaping out the bottom or possible the top opening. Even though we were sure to always keep it closed. My husband, my mother-in-law, and myself have now all been bitten. It is painful!! They are now in the garage, and my son has developed a fear of ants. DO NOT BUY THIS!!
