It's a nice scoop but the ice cream doesn't scoop out too well with the shape it is. It has a flat end rather than a round end. We tend to use our other, much older one, before we use this one. It's not too bad as long as the ice cream is soft enough.

I eat ice cream almost every day so I've been on the hunt for the perfect ice cream scoop. This is the best one I've found so far, however there are two important things worth noting.

1. If you put it in the dishwasher, put it in its own utensil compartment so other sharp utensils can't scratch it while the dishwasher is running. This will prevent the chrome plating from breaking down.

2. Good ice cream is easy to scoop. If your ice cream is too hard to scoop, it's probably not good ice cream. Look at the ingredients and if you can't pronounce all the words then it's lousy ice cream.

For example, Ben and Jerry's used to be very good but it was bought by a large company and it has preservatives in it. It's still one of the better ones, but it's not a pure as Haagen Dazs (they use 4 base ingredients plus the flavorings). Their vanilla ice cream has 5 ingredients, you can pronounce them all and probably have all of them in your kitchen. Guess what, it's really easy to scoop because of that. Keep in mind though, Haagen Dazs is made by Nestle and some people don't like some of their business practices.

Besides preservatives, the other thing a lot of ice cream companies are doing is churning their ice cream in a way that puts more air in the ice cream. This means you're getting less ice cream and they're making more money. This also means more ice crystals form in the ice cream and make it harder to scoop. So, make sure you're buying high quality ice cream that is old fashion churned... the only national brand I know of that is done this way is Haagen Dazs, but there may be local brands where you are. Start by reading the ingredients.

I've had one of these for a while and liked it, so I bought one for my mom. It's sturdy and easy to use. Sometimes you need to use a spoon to separate the ice cream from the scoop, or you could just run the scoop under warm water before use.

the squared off edge helps cut into hard ice cream but the squared off edge also cuts into the carton. one has to scoop from the edges and the middle - what's a better solution? i don't know, pick your poison.

I've had this scooper for a couple years now. It has always required a fair bit of effort to get it to go through hard ice cream. This tends to result in having to take shallow strokes and the ice cream coming out in thin slivers. A few weeks ago the "neck" part of the metal scooper slid out of the handle; an internal snap most likely due to the force required to scoop tough ice cream. It was still usable though as long as you kept neutral or downward pressure on it while scooping, which is usually the case anyway. Today the plastic plug in the end of the handle where the neck goes in snapped as well so it all comes apart very easily now. Hopefully I'll be able to manage the next couple of bowl-fulls while I shop for a new, easier to use scoop.

The scooper of my dreams, works like a charm. Actually, it's an ice cream scoop with no frills and works as it is designed to work, as a big spoon to put ice cream in a bowl.

This is one great Scooper. The handle is very, very comfortable. The old one we had nearly killed your hand trying to scoop hard icecream. Not this baby.
