I had to load the XP drivers off the included driver CD, but otherwise, this adapter works perfectly fine.
PROS:
I had searched high and low for such an adapter so the fact that it exists is a big plus. The other plus is that it works perfectly fine. I think nearly all of the USB to serial adapters out there require you to load some type of driver first.
Also, this driver has a blue light (maybe an LED?) on it to let you know it's hooked in properly. The light didn't go on at first, but did once I loaded the drivers.
CONS:
The connection is very slow --- 9600 bps. I'm not sure if this is specific to this adapter or to all USB/Serial adapters.
My other complaint is that the driver put the adapter on COM port 9 (COM9) for some reason. I had to go under control panel and change it to COM1 before the adapter worked.

This items works fine for me under XP Home on my laptop. Comes with easy to follow instructions and a CD with the drivers. The blue LED glows when connected, glows brighter when a serial device is connected, and flashes as data is transferred between USB and serial. I did quite a bit of research trying to find a USB to serial solution - I am very happy with my choice.

I use this adapter to connect my laptop (Compaq Presario with Window XP) with a Garmin eTrex vista GPS. A small problem, it only works with the MapSource software but not with Microsoft Streets & Trips. Microsoft Streets & Trips just won't find the GPS with any communication protocol including NMEA and RTCM. It is not a problem for me, because I purchased the MapSource software. For poeple who wish to use Microsoft's map (mostly for free, mine come with my new pc), you have to try with some other combination.

I originally bought an IOGEAR USB Serial adapter but after numerous attempts at installing drivers, changing Ports, searching for information on IOGEARS technical site, I gave up hope to get my Palm Vx connected to my new Windows XP computer. I decided to buy my second adapter (Cables To Go) after I read reviews from Amazon that this one DID work with XP. I got it and after some minor computer adjustments it works. And the information given with this Adapter is so much clearer then the IOGEARs one. I can finally HotSync. YES! I am very pleased.

I purchased three of these devices, (cablestogo #26886). They all worked fine with two devices, (a toledo scale and loadcell), but they all failed with a third device, a Kollmorgen stepper motor controller.

If you measure the static transmit (TX) signal level on the #26886, it is about -6.4 volts. But the TX signal level on older RS232 ports (like my circa 2000 Dell desktop) runs about -10 volts. The higher voltage signal appear to disable the #26886. The stepper motor controller that I was connecting to has a static TX signal level about -9.4 volts. If I attempt to use the #26886 to communicate with the device, it HANGS THE WINDOWS DEVICE DRIVER. Windows still runs, but you can't kill the hung driver and the only way to clear it is by rebooting, (yes, I was using the latest Prolific driver, just downloaded 1-5-2011).

So, the device works nicely to communicate with the newer, lower voltage devices, but for older devices, you'll probably need a different solution. You can check your device RS232 voltage level by measuring it with a voltmeter, pin5 (GND) and pin 3 TX on a DE9 connector.

I am using this with my HP Pavilion laptop running Windows XP Home. It was easy to install and worked right away. I am using it to talk to a Meade LXD75 telescope with the Autostar controller.

Unfortunately, this product did not function for my application. I have a Home Theater Master MX800 Universal Remote Control that requires a serial interface. Like everyone else, none of my PCs have a serial interface. I followed the directions for installation of the USB to Db9 product exactly as described for my Windows XP system. I also, verified the serial configuration required by my MX800, tried the product on all com port #s available, and rebooted several times as instructed. Just in case there was something unique about the PC I was working with, I even tried an alternative PC. None of my actions worked. From reading the other reviews, it seems this product does function for some specific apps. Beware if you are trying to interface to a Home Theater Master Remote Control.

Didn't work for me. Data from target randomly scrambled.

Bought KeySpan Tripp-Lite USB-Serial 19HS cable for $10 more at Amazon. Works like a charm. I use PuTTY and Tera Term terminal emulators. See examples of display with Tera Term (which scrambled characters and threw in CR's or LF's, and Putty which only scrambled random characters by displaying the preceding alpha numeric character).

Correct display with KeySpan 19HS adapter is screen shot PuTTY4.
