Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

A former major-label talent scout with a penchant for world music, Los Angeles singer Rosey first surfaced on the Bridget Jones's Diary soundtrack with the hypnotic funk-hop track "Love." Rosey possesses a husky alto that sounds like a cross between Beth Orton and Fiona Apple, but her soulful debut shows no signs of the ethereality of those women, continuing instead with the hybrid of funk, hip-hop, and rock on "Love." Not surprisingly, the best tracks on Dirty Child can't be categorized into specific genres. The beat-driven "Like a Dream" has Eastern-tinged rhythms and seductive bass squiggles; "The Time" addresses female empowerment with lazy, jazzy style and funky sass; "My Baby" is a bluesy torch song that crackles like a vintage 78; and "One" is sharp, steamy trip-hop. The lack of obvious chorus hooks makes individual songs hard to remember, yet, as with Nikka Costa, Rosey's powerful voice and flavorful originality are well worth embracing. --Annie Zaleski

5.0 out of 5 stars Rosey's Intriguing Debut, July 13, 2002
By A Customer
Last night, I got to meet Rosey. She is currently the opening act on Melissa Etheridge's Skin Tour. I was already a fan before going to the concert, even though I had only heard a few song samples from her CD. Onstage, she was full of energy as she sang about five songs from "Dirty Child," including "Love," which is also featured on the soundtrack to Bridget Jones' Diary. After her set, she announced that she would sign autographs, so I of course went over to the stand. After buying the CD, I stood in line and waited to meet her. I am happy to say that she is very sweet and takes time to talk to every fan. She told me to enjoy the album, and while we were driving home last night, I did just that. There isn't one song on the whole CD that I don't enjoy listening to. Her style is definitely unlike a lot of the other musicians that I like, but it has bits and pieces of every type of music so that it appeals to a large audience. After listening to her voice, I would describe her as being part Norah Jones and part Fiona Apple, with a bit of Fisher mixed in there as well. After listening to the music, I would describe it as being a little bit of rock, a little bit of pop, and a whole lot of Rosey. You can easily dance to it, but you can just as easily listen to it when you're stressed and want to relax. Rosey also writes all of her songs, which make the lyrics seem more real and the messages even more important. I definitely recommend this CD and I think that you will enjoy it just as much as I do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, July 3, 2002
I almost didn't review this album, because I couldn't figure out how to categorize Rosey. I was trying to figure out who her voice reminded me of. I came up with Sheryl Crow, Poe, Edie Brickell, Shirley Manson, PJ Harvey and Ani DiFranco.
the only way I can describe her stuff is as a fantastic hybrid of funk, rock and hip-hop with a hint of reggae. It just refuses to be labeled.
Contrast the pop styling of "Afterlife" with the funk of "Love" and the mellow groove of "Beautiful" and you'll understand.
That said, she's also got one hell of a voice. Her lyrics are powerful and her groove is infectious. Will Rosey be a superstar? Probably not. But that's just because her stuff is too good and too complex. It's not the bubble-gum pop of today's collection of pop divas/ditzes.
If you're just interested in the latest "flavor of the month" this isn't the disc for you. If you like good music and if you want something that you'll still be listening to and enjoying in 10 years, I recommend adding this CD to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites, September 7, 2006
By BATCAT43 (Covington, KY) - See all my reviews
I bought this disc several years ago, but still feel compelled to write a review now, after so many times played. I am in love with this album! Rosey has a fun, flirty voice that makes all her songs addictive. I was given a CD single of Love in 2002 in Chicago, and immediately had to buy the whole album. Loved it from day 1, and it is probably the only CD I have from several years ago that I always keep within hand's reach in my car. I only wish that she'd release a follow-up album.
