Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Take off your thinking caps, kids! Given the crude promise of its low-concept title, you'd be forgiven for wanting Sorority Boys to be a passable hybrid of Animal House and Some Like It Hot. Reduce those expectations and you'll find this college comedy to be at least mildly amusing, beginning when three frat-rats (Barry Watson, Harland Williams, Michael Rosenbaum) are forced by circumstance to pledge--in drag, of course--at a nearby sorority. They can't begin to pass as females, but the movie's loaded with idiots who don't seem to notice. Even more problematic is the movie's attempt to teach a lesson about sexual politics; better, in this case, to stick with gags about dueling dildos and erections in coed showers, and relish cameos by Animal House alumni and the good-natured charm of Heather Matarazzo (Welcome to the Dollhouse) in another nerdy role. With your brain on hold, a few belly laughs are an unexpected bonus. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Lighten Up, August 28, 2005
By beej (Calgary, AB) - See all my reviews
This movie is hilarious. It is also what you expect. It is not an Oscar winning epic nor it is designed to be. Don't bash it for being silly, it it what is is - roll on the floor funny!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT, May 4, 2005
OK now first for the people who said women should find this movie offensive. I AM a woman and I am a mother. Now let me say as a mother and a female who finds the wet shirts part freaking hilarious. This movie ROCKED! I love it!! For the person who said cross dressing men was weird. WAKE UP! It's realistic.
For the person who said it focussed on the commercial woman and perfect movie. Did we watch the same movie. HELLO these guys saw it from a girls POV and hell even STATED at the end that they learned more in a week of being DOGS then they had 4 years in the KOK house. Real offensive there......NOT

4.0 out of 5 stars Tosh, but laugh-a-minute tosh., April 20, 2002
By Mike (Wellington, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
"Sorority Boys" (2002)

Guys dressing like girls - ... The idea is so recycled that the idea of making yet another film about cross-dressers should be chucked out the window, threw in a bin and never released. Or should it? Sorority Boys is mostly recycled ideas, but it brings some new laughs to the premise. I actually enjoyed almost every minute of this crude little feast.

The jokes in this movie are what made me enjoy it so much. I didn't expect this movie to be so rude and crude. It turns out that Sorority Boys is more like American Pie or Not Another Teen Movie than I expected it to be! It has jokes about erections, topless girls, falling out of windows, falling out of boats, lesbians,...and everything that an audience loves to see. It's all very crude and half-hearted, but it's entertaining and has me rolling in the aisles. So what's the big deal if it's not original? You enjoy it!

I enjoyed the acting in the film as well. It would be hard to find 3 different actors other than Michael Rosenbaum, Barry Watson and Harland Williams. Rosenbaum in particular (who also stars in TV's Smallville) is quite engaging as a woman, which I feel strange saying. Williams is hilarious once again, he always seems to pop up in teen comedies! Watson is the least interesting of the "sorority boys" but he wasn't too bad. Apart from the three leads the girls were also quite funny but their personalities were a little disappointing. The script copied way too much from Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo when it came to the DOG girls.

The movie also has a good script. It's not an award winner by any means, but if your sick of the Beautiful Mind's, the Monster's Balls and the Iris', then your tear ducts can take a vacation with this silly but enormously funny screenplay. There are jokes across the board and I was laughing out loud at least every 10 minutes. The movie also has quite a good and surprising equivalence message. One other aspect of the script I really enjoyed was when the guy-girls started becoming like girls - realising they need new dresses, need new lipstick, the shops don't have their size and many other things. I think this concept might seem like a flop but the script was such a winner that the big-time studios just couldn't resist.

I can't think of much else to say about Sorority Boys, I think most aspects of the movie were very good and I think it's a movie meant purely for entertainment value and laughs and it worked very well on those levels. There's something for most people here, for the guys - you can enjoy all the topless girls and crude humour, girls - you'll like the fact that you can humiliate the characters on-screen, and grandparents - well, on second thought, you should stay away from this movie! For ages 12-35 though, this is a fun fare that you'll enjoy if you realise it's not meant to be taken too seriously!

Sorority Boys isn't going to win any Oscars in 2003, but I think it will win an audience's heart (and funny bone!).
