Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Western Digital Caviar Special Edition hard drives are designed for maximum performance in applications such as computer gaming, digital video editing, and file servers. They deliver data faster than any hard drive in their class. This hard drive features a 200 GB capacity, 8 MB buffer, 7200 RPM, up to 100 MB/s burst transfer rates, state-of-the-art areal density, and Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) technology, which improves hard drive reliability, and reduces heat, vibration, and noise.

Data Protection Enhancements

  • Data Lifeguard is an expanded set of data protection features that include shock protection, an environmental protection system, and embedded error detection and repair features that automatically find, isolate, and repair problem areas that may develop over the extended use of the hard drive. With these enhanced data reliability features, the drive can perform more accurate monitoring and error repair and deliver exceptional data security.
  • Data Lifeguard Tools is a set of software utilities that work in conjunction with the embedded Data Lifeguard features to make hard drive installation, drive management diagnostics, and repair simple and worry-free.
  • Shock Guard provides outstanding improvements in shock and vibration protection for WD Caviar Special Edition drives. Shock Guard allows instantaneous data protection at high shock values to achieve leading shock specifications.

Product Description

WD Caviar Special Edition hard drives are designed to maximize desktop computer performance for activities requiring high-performance storage such as computer gaming, digital video editing, and file server applications. Offering various capacities, the WD Caviar Special Edition family is equipped with an 8MB buffer - the largest buffer available today in a desktop EIDE hard drive, delivering data to users faster than any hard drive in its class. The Western Digital hard drive comes with a Cable Select compliant 40-pin, 80-conductor IDE interface cable, mounting screws, jumpers, installation poster, installation guide, and Data Lifeguard Tools installation software and utilities. The Special Edition hard drive provides a higher percentage of cache hits and significantly faster time to data than industry-standard 2 MB versions. Within the complex operations of hard drives, the buffer is used to hold the results of recent reads from the disk, and also to 'pre-fetch' information that is likely to be requested in the near future. The use of an increased buffer improves the performance by reducing the number of physical accesses to the disk and allowing data to stream from the disk uninterrupted

5.0 out of 5 stars Western Digital RAID Works!, February 7, 2004
By dranansi "dranansi" (Bridgetown, St Michael Barbados) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this drive top add to my main office computer in a RAID system. There are 3 (three) 80GB drives in the computer and this one is mirroring the data drive.

SO far it has been 8 months and no problems. In fact all THREE are Western digital drives. The other two came installed on the system and have been running continuously for over a year now.

No, I don't turn off my computer unless there is a lightning storm!

I am happy! They are whisper quiet and very FAST! I heartily endorse this drive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Two WD800 HD failures at 2.5 year mark, December 30, 2005
By J. Bessa (Ft. Bragg, NC United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I must concur with the previous negative reviews of this HD. My husband bought a Western Digital 80G HD in spring 03 and the motor failed Dec 05. My computer came OEM with a Western Digital 80G in Summer of 03 and it failed 2 wweeks after the other one. Motor again. Drive had 20+ gigs of wedding and baby photos. Irreplaceable. Both computers were UPS protected and medium to light use. Mine was 100% original, used only for email and photo storage (and a little solitaire). No power robbing add-ons, no ventilation issues.

If your data is important to you DO NOT BUY this drive, and I would question any WD product if this is how they handle a defective product. I have no axe to grind other than the failure of these two hard drives.

1.0 out of 5 stars Two Failed WD80 GB HDD in one Year, June 20, 2005
By Robert Kirbo "Zenbob" (Santa Maria, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For many years I used and recommended the WD products. I can no longer offer any such advice but would recommend that anyone looking for a quality HDD look elsewhere -- Seagate, Maxtor, Samsung, Hitachi are all superior drives and far more reliable.

Both drives simply suffered meltdown failure of the motors, shorting out the computer Power supply until removed-- two different computers at two different times, both being used moderately, not "heavy office" or workstation use. Western Digital was useless and insisted that such failures are rare and likely due to abuse. They know that the 80 GB Drives are faulty and they refuse to "fess up." The government should order a recall and everyone should get a credit to buy some other brand of drive. Even when HD drives were delicate in the early 80's, I never had any just burn up like these bits of WD paperweights. My current favorite recommendation is the new Seagate 160 GB and 250 GB drives, fast, quiet and reliable.
