About 18 years ago I was teaching kids outdoors. On the rare occasions that a student misbehaved I would write his or her name down to talk with me after class. One particularly wet winter my list got wet and the writing dissolved. Later, I could not get the trouble-makers to own up, so I decided that week to find a pen with water-proof ink. The Uniball Deluxe worked so well that it became the only pen I ever bought anymore. Unfortunately, as new pens have become available, these have become harder and harder to find in office supply stores, so I was very happy to find them readily available on Amazon. I think people who do a lot of writing tend to have favorite pens because they like the way they feel, or the way they write--maybe it has something to do with the creative process. These work really well for me, so I buy them by the case. Over the years I've had a couple that leaked or didn't write as smoothly, so I think quality control is a small issue. Also, writing over white-out tends to deteriorate the tip and can ruin the pen if you do it a lot. This review is probably a bit OCD for most people, but if you are a writer or artist then you probably understand.

I first encountered this pen when one was handed to me during a real estate closing--since I was selling property, I went ahead and used it. I was amazed at how easy it was to write with this pen, how solid a line it made, how good it felt in the hand, and also how professional and attractive in appearance it is. I "liberated" several more of these pens with the closing company's logo and used them for years before they even began to weaken. These pens are extremely durable, their pen points never seem to flatten out or lose their sharpness, and these features justify their higher price. The manufacturer also boasts that these pens somehow reduce check fraud, but I have never understood what that means. I have found the red ink version especially helpful for editing purposes--since you can write longer (and more legible) comments in the same space than with other pens. In short, these durable pens are just excellent and make writing by hand enjoyable once again.

I've used these pens for 14 years. They are, by far, my favorite pen. However I've noticed the last couple of times that I've purchased them that they are not as good as they used to be. I'm starting to see a lot of blots, or sections of the nib that do not work straight out of the box. I don't know if they changed where they are made, how they are made, or what is used to make them, but they need to go back to the old way.

I found one of these pens rattling around a drawer at home, and after five minutes of use, I knew I had to order a box of them so that I wouldn't run out. I love their smooth, black gel ink, which makes writing a breeze. They are great for journal writing or everyday use, they don't smear, leak through the page, or hurt your hand if you do a great deal of writing in one sitting. And when you buy them by the dozen, you can't beat the price!

I'm so glad they still make these pens! I started using them in the early 1990s, for journaling, when I needed a pen that was fine-point, smooth, reliable, waterproof, and wouldn't soak through paper. I don't use a paper journal much anymore, but when I do use a pen, I still want the best. It feels good to write with these pens! I haven't noticed much if any difference over the years.

UNIBALL "DELUXE" FINE-POINT ROLLER BALL PEN (1 dozen, disposable, model 60052) ~ This is a unique pen I simply must review. This in particular is the pen my wife first bought me accidentally, instead of getting me my usual Pilot pen. This writing instrument is a matter of health for me. So I think you should know about this.

Uniball is a renowned pen for its special ink (called Super Uni-ink, or Uni-ink, or a name to that effect), which features a non-bleeding special ink formula designed to thwart counterfeiters when used for check-writing. This is because the Uniball ink BONDS with the paper the moment it is laid-down (that means "when you write"). The ink characteristically doesn't even bleed through to the back of the paper. This ink is long-lasting, permanent, non-smearing and non-fading, so we would technically state "the lay-down is perfect and 100%". The ink reservoir is generous.

When my wife first bought me a Uniball pen, I was pretty furious. Never having used one, bearing in mind I'm a Pilot man all the way when it comes to roller-ball pens (even though I love a Cross Edge Capless Gel Ink Pen, Jet Black (AT0555-2)). However, I keep a medical log. This is no silly diary with entries complaining about phantom heart attacks. My medical diary consists of aide-memoires about medications, symptoms I have to track and any other problems.

It is literally my life on notebook paper; even my physicians have come to rely on that medical log during office visits. Needless to say, the pen I use for that log is vital. The Uniball handles even the cheapest of paper as if it were Her Majesty's triple cream-laid paper.
