The VeggieTales gang is back for their second Christmas episode. Though the setting is Victorian England, old Ebenezer Scrooge is nowhere in sight, refreshingly. Cavis Appythart and Millward Phelps (Bob and Larry) are just finishing up their first holiday musical in an effort to "teach London to love." However, their hearts aren't in the right place, and the play has more electrical lights than well-meaning words. When they learn that a local church plans to bring out a priceless artifact for their meager holiday-themed play, Cavis and Millward panic and try to steal the precious Star of Christmas (which looks something like a turtle). Sure enough, the boys will learn their lesson and discover the meaning of Christmas. There's enough wit and song to justify the longer length (45 minutes) of this episode that vastly improves on the unremarkable first VeggieTales Christmas show. (Ages 4 and older) --Doug Thomas

From the Back Cover

Cavis Appythart and Millward Phelps (Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber) are putting the finishing touches on their first Christmas Spectacular musical - "The Princess and the Plumber." With stage great Effie Pickering in the lead role and more electric lights than 1880 's London could ever hope to illuminate, Cavis is sure his show will "teach London how to love!" But when word gets out that little Edmund Gilbert's (Junior Asparagus) Christmas pageant, featuring the unveiling of a beloved and priceless artifact, is scheduled for the same night, will our two playwrights turn to desperate measures? Find out as the artists at Big Idea take you on an exciting holiday adventure all the way to a new understanding of the one Christmas story that really can teach us to love each other!

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars For The Star Of Christmas!, November 21, 2002
By B.P. "tilley_traveler" (Wisconsin, United States) - See all my reviews
This fine Veggie Tales feature is an improvement over The Toy That Saved Christmas and certainly has a quality that will enable it to become a seasonal classic.
The first time I watched it I practically laughed the whole way through it!
This video is filled with quirks of comedy that are all very well done. From a crazy ride in a rocket-carriage, to the clumsy theft and retreat of Cavis & Millward to even their unsuccessful musical: The Princess and the Plumber, this video will not disappoint the viewer for hilarious scenes and concepts. Plus it has plenty of entertaining music to amuse. But I'd have to say that The Star of Christmas has a serious note too. The fact that it has no trademark Veggie Theme Song or Silly Song With Larry saddens the Veggie fan a bit, but doesn't make it that much less desirable. What rises above those missing details is how the story has a thought-provoking way of bringing out a point. Opening the mind with its presentation of how sharing the love of the season with others should be a simple act of selflessness. The ending does a smart job of concluding this and inspires the spirit to become more aware and less self-centered.
Also it cannot go without notice that Big Idea Productions put a part of themselves into this 45-minute video. Making it that much more special because of their distinctive account of what should always remain at the heart, the center, or as the true Star of Christmas. The one story that can teach us to love.

Its beautiful and touching as well as charming and funny, a VERY recommendable pick from the ever-increasing bumper crop of Veggie Tales videos. This is one that you'll WANT to share with friends & family during the holiday season. It REALLY is a great video that all ages can enjoy, for kids and adults defiantly!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Veggie Tales yet!, November 2, 2002
By "wolery7" (Bardstown, KY USA) - See all my reviews
I'm a fan of Veggie Tales and just got this new release last night. The production, imagery and details improve with each episode. This one has outstanding scenery, action, music and characterizations, especially the return of "Madame Blueberry." As far as the humor, it is difficult to improve on perfection but the Big Idea group always finds a way. This had some real laugh-out-loud scenes. The ending was a surprise and very touching. During the ending I did have to ask myself why I was so affected by performing vegetables, but when you see it, you'll understand. Definitely five stars and a major hit with a terrific message, not just for kids but for all ages.
