Manufactured in the U.S. with a high-performance laminate material, this hood is designed to provide head and neck coverage with respiratory protection from chemical and biological agents. The soft, high-stretch rubber neck seal conforms to irregular neck contours, allowing a secure fit on a wide variety of users. Its unique nose cup helps reduce lens fogging and carbon dioxide buildup by directing airflow inside the hood. The MSA Safety Works Gas Mask Hood canister features a high-efficiency particulate filter and special activated carbon. The large lens and translucent hood allow better visibility and face recognition, and the integrated nose cup allows users to breathe and speak normally. The hood also features cradle-type head straps that allow for quick, donning in the event of an emergency. The hood includes an instructional videotape on how to use and care for the hood, as well as how to "shelter in place," using recommendations from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The hood comes in a sealed aluminized bag to keep the canister and product fresh until needed. The hood has a 4-year shelf life. The hood should only be used by individuals who are medically qualified to wear it.

I ordered this mask to check it out and found a warning printed on the sealed aluminized bag cautioning that use is limited to 15 minutes. Unless your intended use is to escape from unsafe point A to safe point B within 15 minutes, this is not for you.

I suppose the product COULD be good, if you get it fresh. Don't buy this from Amazon until they guarantee that the product hasn't been collecting dust on its shelves since it was manufactured on March 4, 2003 (says so on the inner foil pouch). Pouch also says "Expiration date May 2006", meaning my order of 12/05 gave me all of 5.5 months of shelflife on a 3year-2 month shelflife. That's 14% of the $300 value I paid for qty. 2. Worse, when I returned it asking for product made in the month I receive it, they immediately shipped me two more of the same-dated, almost useless product!

Responding to "Beware--for 15 minutes use only"

I know a little about gas masks, and I believe that this is a standard type of warning that manufacturers put on gas masks--It will last longer than 15 minutes. This rating meets government standards and is the same rating that other manufacturers' gas masks have to meet. You have to remember that this gas mask is for emergency use, anyway, and you use it to help you breathe while you are escaping from a poisonous atmosphere. You put it on and you run away from the poison to a place where you no longer need to wear the gas mask.

People who use respirators on the job often find that the products really last longer than they are rated for.

If you compare this to a product like an appliance, and realize that the warranty that comes with it is for only a few years, then this makes more sense. Who is going to want a refrigerator that really lasts only 3 years?? Who is going to buy a CD player or camera that really expires in only 3 months or even 1 year? The people who take that seriously are the ones who buy expensive additional warranties that they never have to use!!!

You have to remember that this gas mask is designed to give people the best protection under the circumstances. So, if you really think you need an emergency gas mask in case of chemical biological warfare, then buy this. It's a good deal, after all!
