Product Description

In a rundown circus on the outskirts of Mexico City, 13 year-old Alma earns a living as a trapeze artist and fire breather. When her fellow performers find out that she is pregnant, Alma is expelled from the circus. She lives on the streets until she meets a troup of traveling puppeteers that preach the word of god. Alma sees a promise in them, a glimpse of hope. This is the story of a young girls' search for redemption and forgiveness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, March 16, 2008
By Bruja (Seattle and San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This is an incredible movie. It's common to run away with the circus not from it. Without giving away the plot, I'd like to say this movie is absolutely haunting. Other reviewers who think it weird have no artistic vision. See it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disturbing, February 27, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A young teen lives and works in a circus, as a high-wire trapeeze artiste/fire-eater. She is extra close to her father, so close that she becomes pregnant to him.

He dies, and she is forced to either give up the circus, or her unborn. She chooses to go onto the streets. There she meets a woman who travels about healing people and acting as some sort of voice for God.

Then the film gets weird!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad just not good., March 24, 2004
On the cover of this movie it says "One of the 100 best Mexican movies of all time". I certainly don't agree. It's not that it's a bad movie it's just not good. But then if you sit through the first 20 minutes you know this.

I'm all for character development, but develop the character, don't just linger over images of them. Throughout this movie my fiancee got up regularly, left the room and came back to discover that nothing had happened in the interim.

There are many shots of nudity, some of it even seeming a bit gratuitous. If you're offended by this don't bother as they are sprinkled throughout the movie. But then if you're bothered by that sort of thing why are you watching a movie that starts out with incest?

The only extra the DVD has is filmographies for the three main characters and the director. Also the translation on this disc is way off in some spots ("Senor" does not translate to "God", "know" and "now" are different in English, Etc.).
