I'm from an Italian family, and we always had bowls of nuts that my grandfather shelled for us kids after holiday dinners. I never realized just what a difficult job cracking those nuts was until my husband and I recently attempted it ourselves--unfortunately using the same flimsy type of metal nutcracker that my grandfather used to use. The very next day, I went out and purchased this Oxo Good Grips Slim Nut/Seafood Cracker. I was a little hesitant, as it seemed a bit pricey, but I brought it home, telling my husband that it was an early Christmas gift for him. Well, he was the first to use it, trying it on a Brazil nut--you know, the ones in the mixed nut bag with the thickest, hardest-to-crack shells. We were both taken aback when, after he had barely exerted much pressure at all with the new Oxo Nut Cracker, the nut easily came apart in his hands! We found this product worked just as well on larger nuts, like walnuts, as did on smaller nuts, such as almonds and hazelnuts. The weighty feel and larger size make the Cracker easier to hold, and the black grips decrease the risk of slippage. We haven't yet tried the Cracker for seafood, but I am confident that the Oxo would perform just as well as a Seafood Cracker as it does with nuts. Highly recommended!

The wide handles make it easy to crack small nuts without hurting your hands. It does not work very well for large nuts since you tend to increase the pressure and when the shell cracks you mash it to a pulp.
For large nuts I suggest the Zyliss model. Having both of these you will be more than a match for any nut.

I am not using this a nutcracker but as a paint opener. I am a fine artist and opening up oil paint tubes can be a painful experience. Many times to paint dries in the lid and makes it extremely difficult to open. After filling my palette which can be up to 60 colors, my hand gets torn up from opening them. Many tub lids are poorly designed and are either too small to grasp or have uncomfortable ridges that rip the skin off my hand . After a day I the studio of opening up tubes, mediums, and turp containers, I feel extremely uncomfortable and frustrated, especially after opening up galkyds. I have even had to put tubes in boiling water to expand the plastic and pry the lids off. I was concerned that the nutcracker would not be able to open up some small lids, but it opens all of my lids just fine. The handle is extremely comfortable and an amazing alternative to the horrible ridges on most tubes that leave my hand so torn up. I love how heavy duty this is and it looks great in my studio. Hopefully it will last me forever but if it doesn't I will just buy another. The price is extremely inexpensive for what I am using it for and I think they should market it for artists. I wish I bought this years ago, it would have saved me a lot of time and heartache. I know it's a non traditional use for a nutcracker but it definitely changed my life.

I love eating crab legs and I'm usually bending forks out of whack trying to crack open the legs to eat the crab meat. After reading the reviews I bought this product. I liked the design and it's comfortable to hold. I am able to open larger crab legs with it but not smaller ones. I'm still using a fork.

I use this to crack walnuts. It works pretty well although a few times I shot the shell halfway across the room...but that seems to happen with a lot of the nut crackers. I have not yet tried it on crab claws. It works well with nuts though.

I have arthritic hands and need to crack walnuts, filberts and almonds every morning for my parrots...THIS WORKS !!! Comfortable, powerful and very well balanced. It also doesn't demolish the nuts, it just gets the shell open enough for my birdies to do the rest. I have very week hands and yet find this nutcracker easy to use. I highly reccommend.
PS This should last forever...it is definitely not flimsy.
PSS It also makes a great champagne cork remover...much better than the pliers I was useing :-)
