Devil May Cry 2 brings us back to Dante's world, and this time his fellow demon-fighter friend, Lucia, has her own disc. OK, she sounds a bit like Celine Dion, and her plot's a little silly, but she has her own disc with a reasonable 13 missions. She's refreshingly clothed for a female character, and like Dante, she can transform using "devil trigger"--the equivalent of rampage mode in other games. Dante's disc holds 18 missions, with a few redundant maps between the two characters.

Visually stunning, Devil May Cry 2 offers minute details that envelop the player. For example, when walking on the roof in a little Italian villa, you can hear the distinct sound of tiles under your feet.

As with the original Devil May Cry, this is not a game for children. It comes with a gore warning, but in this game some of the gothic elements--like the Demonochorus (possessed cherubs) or Infestants (energy-sucking insectlike things)--might disturb even an adult's sleeping pattern.

This is one game where it really pays to pick up the strategy guide, and here's why: Players need to complete the mission in as little time as possible. Since lots of great power-ups are found in secret rooms, you would waste a lot of time endlessly inspecting doors without it, and never reach the coveted S status that comes with a fast run through a level. The overall grade is a combination of your rankings in style, collected number of orbs, the number of items you used (the fewer the better), damage, and your overall clear time. This isn't just an attempt to get you to buy more, we promise: you'll get far more orbs, find many more secret chambers, and enjoy the nuances of the game better with the guide.

Characters can jump off the walls Matrix-style, shooting from midair. The game allows for limitless ammo and energy. These and many other facets recommend Devil May Cry 2, even if some fans find it less engaging than the original. In our opinion, it's as addictive as other sequels from successful franchises--Final Fantasy comes to mind--and we're hoping for more reincarnations. --Jennifer Buckendorff

The Gothic thriller taken to new hype. And in that last sentence there is one word that does not belong: Gothic. DMC 2 is essentially Shinobi Redux. There is no story, no mystery, and little more than pressing the buttons to acheive moves.

Pros:

I strain to find any. But, Disc 2...Lucia's quest is a little better than Dante's. Still has all the cons, though she reminds me of BloodRayne.

Cons:

1. Lack of a storyline, of any kind.
2. The camera angles are so bad that most of the time you are lost or don't know what you are fighting.
3. Dante's modeling is from a far distance and the combat is rhetorical at best.
4. It mimics Shinobi in most aspects. There's the empty city, deranged tanks and even copies of those hated dogs from Stage 3-A.
5. The swordplay was taken directly from Onimusha & Onimusha 2, it's that obvious. But, in this game...the sword will get you killed. It's all guns, no glory.
6. Dante is slow. He runs through the city in a crawl-like way and it takes forever to get from one place to another.
7. The beginning takes a lot from Tomb Raider and is quite pointless. You don't know where you are in this game and there's nothing to find.
8. It takes forever to power-up and there's not enough enemies in a single mission to get you the orbs to power-up.
9. The attack method is not similar to the original and The Matrix stunts won't get you the high demon rank.
10. Graphics. Twice the graphics, huh? The graphics can't hold a candle to Onimusha 2 in gameplay. The cutscenes aren't anywhere near Onimusha (1 or 2)and there is a scene where Dante slides down a pipe - similar to Final Fantasy X, though far less impressive. The main gameplay is reminiscent of BloodRayne...though...not in its league.

Ok, I gave you 10 reasons for the my point. Capcom has been in a frenzy to produce so much this past year and ahead with Resident Evil Zero, RE 1 remake, and RE 4. The company has given us high quality games such as the Onimusha series, the original Devil May Cry and others. This leads me to believe that this DMC was overhyped and underdeveloped.

This wasn't intended as a bash review and I didn't want to write it in that way, honestly. I looked forward to this game for so long. My suggestion is that you rent this one first, see if you like it, and during that week rental...surely you can pick up the game if you are into it. I'm sorry fellow gamers, but the hype doesn't fit the game. This is not Devil May Cry...it's a confusing mess. It is not Gothic, not dark, and holds no bearing to the namesake.

I'll probably get a lot of unhelpful votes from the hardcore, but I'm in the top 5000 reviewers (feel free to check my rank) and I won't steer you wrong.

Intro - Let it be known that I have not finished this game. I have enough information to write a temporary review, which will be properly enhanced and revised once I have beaten the game. The reason for me posting this now is because I know many gamers and people alike are interested in reading up on this highly anticapated sequel, due to the great success of the awesome original. For now, everything I say is worth reading if you are interested in this game, and want feedback from someone who actually played it, and does not work for the game company.

Regarding the first, I loved the first DMC, but the end was terrible. The guys at Capcom really didn't know how to end it, which is ashame because everything flowed perfectly until then. It is obvious that you don't through mini-games at the end of a action/adventure. The whole red airplane (for those who beat the original) idea was cheesy and lame. The game also didn't need that silly space shooter at the end before you fight the big boss who killed Dante's father.

Enough said about the original, the second seems to have really improved over everything thus far ... except the story which is less involved. I guess this could be a good thing, because the first DMC built up this story about Dante's father in hell and Dante never saw his father. Devil May Cry 2 is not focused on building up a big story, therefore we can't be disappointed when the end story becomes weak and chiche' like the first.

DEVIL MAY CRY 2 - Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. Now, this is my thus-far review on DMC 2! Dante hero has returned to continue his war against the underworld of demons and super-villains. Joined by a hot chick named Lucia, you can choose which character you want in the beginning of the game. Each character plays extremely differently regarding moves, speed, and style. Lucia has some awesome martial arts that will attract many gamers. Choosing either character will create alterations in the story. Each character gives you a different ending (I have read) which adds nice replay value for the majority who buy this game.

Gameplay - Devil May Cry 2 took a little bit of time to grow on me due to the huge change of enviroment and open spaces. The game isn't twice the size of the first, it is like five-ten times the size! This should give gamers 20-30+ hours of gameplay. The game is very simular to the original in terms of gameplay, but the moves in this one are amazing! The same engine is used, however, Dante is really modified. Two examples are the famous double-jumping, as well as running up walls like in The Matrix! At first I was expecting something different, but in time I realized that this game was very addictive and makes you explore more than the first. The levels are so much bigger, and the detail is much more impressive over-all, as opposed to the first. I did not notice any jaggies, slowdown, clipping, etc ... all gripes I had with the first Devil May Cry. Hopefully the game will stay like that, because the draw distance is damn impressive, probably the best seen yet on the PS2. You can make it to the top of the buildings and see for miles, running across the roofs and jumping from building to building, all while battling monsters in the air and on ground. It is really a site to see.

Story and Complaints - The only complaint I have is that the story and plot is pretty weak. DMC 2 seems less involved in story than the original. It is pretty straight-forward and simplistic. I believe we learn more about both Dante and Lucia as the game progresses, but I havn't reached that far to review that. In a nutshell, Dante returns with this hot, new girl (Lucia) to take care of business and kill the demons and monsters sent from Hell to cause chaos. It is a cheap excuse to make such a storyline, but everyone knows that if you want a deep, engrossing story, you play Metal Gear Solid. Anyway, DMC2 will be the biggest game of this year, next to Halo 2, Silent Hill 3, and Fable AKA Project Ego. (if that ever gets released) Also, I have seen several official cut-scene's on www.ign.com. I wish that DMC2 didn't copy off The Matrix during several parts. I really hate when games rip-off other things, but that is a minor gripe.

Devil May Cry 2 totally surpasses the original in terms of graphics, size, and gameplay. To say DMC2 is a little better is a joke. DMC2 is awesome from the start. I have only seen part of it so I can not fully judge the game as a whole. Trust in mine though, the gameplay is identical to the first one in every way perfect, stylish, and flawless. Do not expect as much innovation at first. If there is innovation, it will come later in the game after you've earned it. I truly hope there is martial arts for Dante, as that was damn awesome in the original.

In Conclusion - Devil May Cry 2 is highly recommended. It is the greatest action/adventure game I have ever played to date, next to Zelda - Ocarina Of Time and Metal Gear Solid 2. The camera angles simular to the first one, yet they seem to have been better tweaked and adjusted, giving you the best possible view on every angle. Most times, the camera simply follows you while changing angles and it all works great, just like a movie. For me, this technique is excellent, not boring like the still shots that have plagued the Resident Evil games. DMC2 stays true to the coolness of the original, but improves and adds so many things that I can't wait to see all the things in the upcoming missions. New moves may take some time for gamers to "get" but the learning curve is fairly easy, whether you're familiar with the first or not. The new enemies are very different and more relentless. The boss fights are once again very competitive and impressive. I have only seen the first boss fight. I will not spoil anything. Buy this game when it arrives. It is flat-out awesome!

Considering Capcom's track record with sequels outshining the originals, I anxiously awaited the release of Devil May Cry 2. The original game, while not without its flaws, was a greatly executed game that combined great 3-D action of today's new era with older action gaming elements. Devil May Cry 2's problems come into play with the improvements made from the original. While the levels are quite larger than the original's, the level of detail and personality are nowhere to be found. The environments just look so generic and unappealing that they will become instantly forgettable. Dante has a few new moves that are easy to pull off, but are worth nothing more than to improve your stylish action rating. Dante also has a partner named Lucia, but her levels are pretty much the same as Dante's only shorter and some go in a reverse order. Also, Dane's ultra cool attitude that he had in the original we hardly see any of until late in the game, but then again the game is rather short, and players will walk away feeling disappointed. All in all, fans of the original should pick this up as a rental, but prepare to be disappointed.
