Although from a very first glimpse this compilation could be dismissed as a gimmick - the new age title, simple packaging and clip art cover art - underneath it's actually a very decent collection of music. Perhaps it's a specific marketing ploy, but I'm not sure why Angel Records hid their label beneath the Virgin logo and didn't title this something as 28 classical pieces from the masters! All of them are here: Satie, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and of course Chopin. The performers are also somewhat veiled, but they do include Kun Woo Paik, Mikhail Pletnev, Peter Lawson and many others. Perhaps not the most known pianists, but still, the execution is great, the recordings well done, the performances do more than their justice to the selections! So basically this is a compilation from other, previously released, recordings by Angel Records, and I wish they would have disclosed the particular dates, etc. That being said, since this is a compilation of multiple recordings, it was digitally remastered and adjusted for volume levels among the pieces - something some record labels fail to do right. So yes, although this review at first appears to be full of criticisms, what I am really trying to say here, is don't overlook this release based upon its initial glimpse...
