Saga is an industrious 11-year-old girl who lives with her grandmother in a small Northern European town. While running errands, she stumbles across Sugar, a tiny apprentice Snow Fairy. Saga is the only human who can see Sugar and her fellow-apprentices Sun Fairy Salt and Wind Fairy Pepper. The trio moves into Saga's room and follows her wherever she goes. Her friends Norma and Anne, her self-styled rival Greta, and her teacher all wonder why Saga has started talking to what looks like thin air. Sugar plays like a cross between Cardcaptor Sakura and the old Strawberry Shortcake cartoons. Although her design is aggressively cute, Sugar fusses and whines, while Saga is a Goody Two-Shoes--they both get tiresome. Sugar scored a big hit in Japan in 2001, and the series will appeal to fans of big-eyed, self-consciously adorable anime who find Hamtaro too edgy. (Rated 3 and older) --Charles Solomon

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Done!, August 21, 2003
By Nurse Washu (South Burlington, VT United States) - See all my reviews
When I first looked at Snow Fairy Sugar, among a zillion other DVD's at an anime con, my initial reaction was like that of Mr. Solomon's - that it would be an overly sweet and sugary kid's show like the name suggests, but I was looking for something for kids anyways, so I bought it. That part I guessed right - it is a good show for kids - but what I wasn't expecting was for the show to be so good! The dramatic/emotional parts are wonderful, and the soundtrack is absolutely beautiful! I loved it more than the kiddies did I think!

The character designs are very cute and they remind me a little of Di Gi Charet. The European town that the show takes place in sort of looks like Kiki's Delivery Service too, but I found out later that the setting was actually taken from the town of Rothenberg Germany. A team from Japan went there and shot a great deal of photos and used them for most of the background artwork. An anime show set in an actual foreign location is a rare find indeed! The main characters, Saga and Sugar, are wonderful people. Saga is outgoing, social, and very friendly. Sugar is very cute looking, playful and funny. However there are certain aspects of the main characters, that aren't so cute. Saga is very organized and disciplined for a girl her age, although she doesn't go overboard with PDA's and stuff like that. When Sugar shows up, Saga very much resents Sugar's intrusion into her orderly life. And Sugar, while cute and playful, can be very demanding and persistant at times. Very good, well developed and well rounded characters! ^_^

This DVD is dual language, so even hardcore anime fans can watch it subbed if you like. However doing that, you would miss out on a wonderfully done dubbing production. The voice actresses for Saga and Sugar do a wonderful acting job, very much like I've been accustomed to with Japanese seiyuu. Pioneer continues to impress me with their dubbing production more and more as time goes on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great family-friendly anime (and that's a rare thing), April 22, 2003
By A Customer
Sugar is a very sweet, family friendly anime targetted at elementary school aged girls and younger, however there's no reason anyone older or male cannot enjoy this sweet fun show about a girl and her innocent 'troubles' and adventures with a group of ultra cute fairies. Charles Solomon described this show well comparing it to Card Captor Sakura (no Saga and Sugar are not tiresome unlike Solomon's reviews) and Strawberry Shortcake. Unlike CCS this show is totally family friendly. It's sweetness will put a smile on your face - the whole series is recommended but do keep in mind who the target audience is. If you want more substance get hold of Perfect Blue or Grave of the Fireflies instead, for me this show is da bomb and if you have a girlfriend/wife or a young daughter this is an item to get for them. ^_^.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Little Snowfairy Sugar- Sweet Mischief, October 29, 2003
A Kid's Review
I am 12 years old and I still think this was such a cool movie! The characters are VERY loveable, especilly Sugar, the snow fairy. The cute part about the main characters is that they all have big eyes! I liked the parts were Saga was going out and Sugar said ''Let Sugar come too!'' BUY THIS DVD IM TELLIN' YA IT'S JUST SO CUTE!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for children
I bought this DVD for my 4 year old daughter and she loves it. The characters are over cute and the dialogue is a bit syrupy but she loves the trouble Sugar causes to Sagas life.
