Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Sylvester Stallone spins a lighter, more romantic version of his tough guy image in Avenging Angelo. For his entire life, Frankie (Stallone) has been protecting Jennifer (Madeleine Stowe), the daughter of a mob boss named Angelo (Anthony Quinn)--but she doesn't know it, any more than she knows that Angelo is her father. When Angelo gets hit, Frankie reveals the truth. Having just caught her husband with another woman, Jennifer isn't receptive to the rest of her life upended; but after accepting her heritage, she decides to avenge her father. If none of this sounds particularly funny, well, it isn't; the problem is, it's supposed to be. Avenging Angelo flounders in search of a coherent comic tone and never finds it. Stowe is always engaging and Stallone's softer touch is surprisingly appealing, but not a moment of this dopey script makes any sense. --Bret Fetzer

3.0 out of 5 stars Kiss & Kill, August 15, 2003
By Lee Armstrong (Winterville, NC United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
"Avenging Angelo" is a fairly good movie, but one I enjoyed despite its shortcomings. It will forever be remembered as the last film of Anthony Quinn's long and illustrious career. Quinn does a good job of playing the mobster with a heart. Sylvester Stallone looks great & has enough puppy dog eyes directed at Madeleine Stowe to charm the coldest of hearts. Stowe as Jennifer does a good job at giving reality to her rich girl with a rocky marriage character. The give and take between she and Stallone keeps the romantic aspect alive. Italian actor Raoul Bova does a good job as the pseudo-writer who charms Jennifer. I'm not sure if it's Harry Van Gorkum or Kip Barrett who played the husband, but he did a great job of being irritating. My favorite moment is when the drugged Jennifer crashes the car in the driveway, only to find her husband making whoopee in the pool with her best friend. This was apparently Martyn Burke's first feature directing job. He had previously written the screenplay for "Gross Anatomy" starring Matthew Modine. The difficulty with the flick is the pull between the romance and the mafia hits. There is humor in the film, kind of a feature-length "Sopranos." For its shortcomings, this is still a pleasant evening's entertainment. Of course, you'll want to see Anthony Quinn one last time. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm surprised by the bad reviews here., June 29, 2004
In my view this is far from being as terrible as some reviewers suggest. In fact I can honestly say I enjoyed both Sylvester Stallone and Madelaine Stowe, whose chemistry was obvious and very pleasant. The plot is not as good as the acting, which is subtle and fun, but even when the story hits low points it's all in a light comedic spirit so who really cares. Good job Sly.

4.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD SUPRISE, June 6, 2003
By BILL (BOCA RATON, FL USA) - See all my reviews
when i was gonna first get the movie i wasnt expecting to really enjoy it that much being that it did not get released in theaters but i wanted it because i do like Stallone movies so i figured i would just check it out. Well i'm so suprised that it did not get a theater release the movie was 100 times better than i was expecting it to be. It had action, comedy, and romance and i would say Stallone's best performance since Cop Land. So i just wanna let people know that dont be scared because it didnt get a theatrical release you will be suprised and entertained trust me.
