5.0 out of 5 stars this bottle is my everyday companion, February 11, 2005

I received this thermos bottle as a gift, and let me tell you, every student/caffeine addict needs one! I was amazed at its ability to keep liquids hot; I would put my tea or coffee in at 7am, and pour a piping hot beverage at 5pm. It survived many falls, including being dropped at high bicycle velocities. I loved this bottle so much, that after losing it, I bought an identical replacement. It is a great size for me (16oz,) but fyi, amazon sells a larger one (0.79 quart) for about the same price. I bought that one for my dad to keep him from coveting mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars JUST PLAIN AWESOME. LET ME EXPLAIN HOW AWESOME IT IS., December 21, 2006

I've had mine for YEARS and it's stood the test of time. It sure came in handy on a HOT summer day when my friend and I were walking around Venice Beach area for hours during morning/afternoon time. Before I left the house, I had filled the Thermos with ice cubes (as many as I could fit) and filled in whatever space was left with cold water. I also carried around a large water bottle that was kept sort of warm by the outside heat. Every time after we drank from the Thermos, I refilled it with the water bottle. The ice melted away a little at a time of course but it pretty much lasted the entire time we were out (remember, I said "hours"). It kept us refreshed and hydrated throughout the day. We were both amazed.

Unfortunately it's suffered a couple of dents due to my clumsy father who would always take each travel mug I have ever purchased. But it still works just as good as it always has. I usually get Thermos Nissan products but anything that says it's "vacuum-insulated" should be sufficient. I've tested it out and filled it with ice to the limit and with cold water and it kept in there for at least 12 hours. But that was at room temperature inside the home and wasn't exposed to any real heat, nor was it opened too many times. I just opened it every other hour to see how much was melting.

As for hot drinks, it keeps them piping hot. Yesterday I boiled some water and immediately poured it in. It was still hot about 5 hours later when I wanted to have some instant oatmeal and tea. It's even more effective to keep drinks hot by warming up the container with hot water prior to adding the hot beverage. Just run hot sink water until it's steaming and then fill the Thermos and put the lid on until whatever drink you're preparing is ready. It's good to do this with even a regular coffee mug you use at home (especially if you like to keep your drinks hot). Oh and make sure you buy a good cleaning brush/wand that has bristles on all sides like a test tube cleaner, only bigger. Ok I guess that's it:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps hot beverages HOT!, January 5, 2007

My 10.9 year-old son asked for something for Christmas to let him bring hot chai to school with him ( yes, that's a bit odd for a 5th-grader.) I ordered this Nissan product as it's compact enough to fit into his backpack and trusted Nissan to provide an absolutely liquid-tight stopper. I was not disappointed.

Our usual morning routine now includes prepping the briefcase bottle and chai for school. I preheat the bottle with 195-degree water from an instant hot water dispenser installed in my sink, and let it sit for about five minutes. Meanwhile, the chai is heated in a microwave to a temperature slightly above what he would normally drink. Out goes the hot water and in goes the chai.

He has reported back to me the chai is still nice-and-hot until he finishes it about 2:00 in the afternoon. This is about seven hours -- a remarkably long time! Nissan provides a nice chart of temperature vs. time in the manual which shows their testing validates our observations.

Coincidental, his aunt gave him an stainless-steel insulated travel mug in response to his request. He used it yesterday for the first time, following the same preheat procedure as the bottle. He reported back that the chai was lukewarm after just three hours! The bottle is clearly superior!

If I had just one problem with the product is that the manual states it is not dishwasher-safe. I don't understand why not -- it's designed to safely hold hot liquids. Frankly, I've ignored this and have not had any problems in the short time we've had it. We always use the energy-saving air-dry setting, so maybe that will avoid whatever concern Nissan has with the dishwasher.
