2.0 out of 5 stars MAYBE NEXT YEAR, September 30, 2003
By "halo_punk" (APO, AP United States) - See all my reviews
When I think of great wrestling games I think of one system, Nintendo 64. They set the standered for wrestling games. So when the Gamecube was released I thought for sure that THQ would breakout the greatest wrestling game of all time. But instead they decided to change the great grapling system of old with some new crap, more like Smackdown than No Mercy. So I was dissapointed to say the least. When I read that they were going back to a No Mercy like grapling system this year my hopes were back again. Now that it's here I have to pose this question. Why do people make bad games?

Before I say what I mean by that let me say that this game is much better than last years effort. Indead they did bring back a lot of the old grapling system from No Mercy, including the best part, being able to work on one part of the body, like say a leg, and weaken it for say a Maple Leaf by Lance Storm. But at the same time, they changed some things, and not for the better. The weak graples aren't done the same, instead of tapping the grapple button then pushing strike and a direction, you push the grapple button and a direction at the same time. This isn't as good, as it moves the match along at an arcade like speed. The game moves much faster in most all aspects, as apposed to No Mercy's slower, more sim like feel. With that said, the game still needs work to be as good control wise as No Mercy.

So what about the features. The Story mode, which is supposed to be the main single player game, sucks. You take a supperstar who has been screwed by Vince, and try to screw up Wrestlmania to get back at him. Never does a fight take place in the ring, they're all backstage and other locations outside of the squared-circle. The missions require you to do dumb stuff like throw 10 secrurity guards off of a constuction site. You repeat that about 5 times for the first of 5 missions, and they don't get any funner. Now I know some might think something as small as not being able to bring you wrestler out with his belt is not a factor, but it is. Imagine you want to have some rivalries going on with your group of friends, and you finally beat the guy who always wins, but you can't rub it in his face by entering the ring the next match with the gold around your waste. It's sad, espescially since it's such a small thing, because it would have been no problem to add it. So is there a redeeming factor. The create-a-wrestler is maybe the best ever. It has everything you could possibly do to a wrestler (other than have an escort to the ring, which is again sad). The detail you can add to your wrestler is great, you can even design your own logos for his clothes. Sadly that alone doesn't make the game worth buying. Maybe next year THQ will finally make a worthy sequal to No Mecry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, August 30, 2004

Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is not going to be that explicit because there are already a lot of other ones in here. Let's break it down.

The graphics are awesome. The characters are somewhat exagerated but they still end up looking pretty realistic. I like the style a lot more than the previous title.

The music is almost perfect. Only a handfull of superstars are lacking their theme music, namely matt hardy, RVD, Evolution, and Rikishi. Fortunately you can still listen to Hogan's Voodoo CHild, Edge's White Zombie theme, and Undertaker's theme, among others. Some themes are outdated for the time the game was released, like Kane's, but I guess we should be thankfull that they aren't many. A create a stable option would have been very apreciated. That way we could have recreated fun tag teams like Kane & the Hurricane, and the unamericans, or created la resistance or the world's greatest tag team.

The animation is below PS2 smackdown's but leaps and bounds better than the other titles. Hogan's entrance is really a thing of beauty. Every superstar feels different and that is a great accomplishment. The moves have been improved since last year and the gameplay is more fun. Like a more arcade-like Wrestlemania 2000. Tag teams even enter the ring together. But the only teams that seem to do this are the Dudleys, Goldust & Booker, and Los Guerreros.

I only really dislike 2 things about the game. First is the inability to create your own tag team. This wouldn't be so bad except that PS2 smackdown's series already has 2 games with that ability! The 2nd thing is the revenge mode. It is pretty anoying after a couple of fights. Thankfully you don't have to complete it to earn money, since you can just keep starting over everytime you need cash to spend in the shopzone. I also really wish that tehy would have included legends, or at least some of the legend's theme songs to use in the create a superstar section.

The game still has tremendous multiplayer replay value. You can customize any wrestler's moveset, and create many more; but I can 't help but feel that the game could have been much better with some of the features already present in THQ's PS2 line.
