This mouthwash is decent. It has an interesting, and in my opinion, potentially valuable formula since it has no alchohol and uses tea tree as an antiseptic. However the price is prohibitive since this can be made at home for under $1 for 16 oz.

Also acidic conditions cause tooth decay/enamel loss, so mouthwashes should be ph 6.5 (saliva ph) and above.

This mouth wash, along with almost all others is suprise!... Acidic. I tested the pH, and it is roughly 5.5.

Like other companies like Tom's of Maine has stated, this is done to preserve the product. Also Tom's has said that the pH of saliva, while reduced after using an acidic mouthwash, returns to normal within 10 seconds; which I have tested and is true with this mouthwash as well. However, that doesn't mean that the initial acid is good for your teeth, which it isn't. It causes weakening of the enamel which you can actually feel, especially if you compare by putting a tsp of baking soda in water and swish with that and see how hard that makes your enamel.

The solution is simple. Add 1/4 tsp of baking soda to bring the pH up to 6.5, a neutral saliva pH. Done. You can also add more if you want to go more basic. I like to have a basic (ph~8) mouthwash before brushing which is like armor for your teeth, then brush (brushing can actually wear down enamel if your teeth aren't protected by a high pH {see sensodyne enamelguard ad's}) then after brushing I like to rinse with a Saliva neutral (pH 6.5) mouthwash to balance the mouth back out, then floss.

I became interested in organic living when my husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Once I was told that this cancer was most probably the result of exposure to some toxin, organic living became the goal at our house. I have been collecting books on organic living ever since. Many of the books that I have read suggest eliminating dyes and preservatives from the foods that we consume.

It would have never occurred to me that chemical and dyes were even in our mouthwash. Check the label on the product in bathroom, I bet they are in there. Why should you care about this, after all you don't swallow mouthwash? Things are absorbed through you skin that's why. How do you think the nicotine patches work? What about the birth control patches, same theory; medications, as well as other substances, are absorbed through the skin into your blood stream.

Since we can't just eliminate mouthwash what are we to do? For one, you could buy this product. Or you could buy a book on making your own natural products (check out "Better Basics for the Home" there are four different recipes for mouthwash, both alcohol based and alcohol free).

The ingredients in this product are:

Purified Water

Glycerin

Polysorbate 80

Organic Tea Tree Oil

Aloe Vera Gel

Witch Hazel Distillate

Ascorbic Acid

Calcium Ascorbate

Citric Acid

Essential Oil of Spearmint

Aloe Vera and Tea Tree Oil are natural antiseptics, disinfectants and anti-fungal agents. Witch Hazel is also a natural antiseptic and disinfectant. In my opinion, these are the keys to keeping your gums healthy without alcohol or chemicals.

Overall, I found this product to be very pleasant to use.

We LOVE Dessert Essence Mouthwash so much we found some extra uses! ;-)

We fill a small spray pump bottle with Dessert Essence Mouthwash so we can spray it in our mouths and swish it around while in the shower. One day I noticed some BO no matter how much I scrubbed my under arms... so on a whim I sprayed some of the tea tree oil mouth wash under, let it soak in a few minutes then washed as normal. WOW! I have now seriously cut back on using deodorant. We also realized our feet are healthier as we never get athlete's foot nor nail fungus anymore... we occasionally spray our toes, too! ;-)

Btw, after brushing my teeth with Jason Healthy Mouth Plus CoQ10 Fluoride Gel Toothpaste, Tea Tree, Cinnamon, 6 Ounce, I spritz Dessert Essence in my mouth, swish good, then brush again with the Tea Tree Oil Mouthwash. My teeth are squeeky clean with no tartar buildup and never any worries of cavities or bad breath. Thank you Dessert Essence!

I chewed tobacco for 6 years before quitting 2 months ago. My gums were mildly receding and would occasionally bleed after brushing and flossing. When I first quit chewing I notice a little difference in gum health but the damage was already done. After just 2 weeks of using this along with the the tea tree oil toothpaste from desert essence, all bleedings gone and my gums look a lot healthier and fuller.

This is a good natural alternative for mouthwash. It's gentle and not too strong. I don't use too much of it, only enough to swish around for 15-30 seconds. You taste a bit of the tea tree oil and a bit of peppermint. It's a great refresher for your mouth, and doesn't leave a strong aftertaste.

I have been using this mouthwash for about a year now and I believe it has resulted in better gum health and all-around oral freshness. From the advice of an old dentist many years ago, I have avoided brushing my teeth with harsh toothpaste, which contains grains of abrasive which only gradually remove the white enamel, thus resulting in yellowing teeth after many years. Instead, I brush my teeth with mouthwash and the Teatree oil mouthwash by Desert Essence seems to be the best one that I've found yet. It has a definite pleasant taste without the usual artificial sweeteners and other ingredients and leaves my mouth feeling fresh and invigorated. The antiseptic property of Teatree oil is simply a plus.
