Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony SNC-RZ30N Pan/tilt/zoom Network Color Camera combines a responsive pan/tilt movement, auto focus, low-light sensitivity, and a powerful zoom, with a network connection and IP capability, making it ideal for surveillance and remote monitoring applications that require orientation and focus on different details. With the addition of its compact design and advanced feature set, the Sony SNC-RZ30N is perfect for a wide range of surveillance applications including the monitoring of people and property in buildings, offices, warehouses, retail outlets, and shopping centers.

The Sony SNC-RZ30N Color Network Camera is a digital network camera that distributes live images or video over an intranet or the Internet via a built-in web-server. The Sony SNC-RZ30N allows high-quality remote surveillance from any browser on the network, and provides full Web-based control of its various management and configuration functions. Connecting via 10/100 Base T/TX Ethernet, the SNC-RZ30N uses the JPEG compression format and achieves up to 30 fps (frames per second) via the NTSC TV signal system.

This integrated PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) camera provides up to 736-by-480 effective pixels, with an extraordinary 25x optical and 12x digital zoom that allows you to clearly pick out even the most distant objects. The Sony SNC-RZ30N features activity detection, and includes a built-in alarm input/output and video output. This camera even presents a transparent interface from RS-232C/485 to Ethernet for network-based control of external devices connected to the camera, and allows up to 50 concurrent users to access the camera via the Internet at levels determined by administrator security settings.

The Sony SNC-RZ30N has a pan-angle range of 340 degrees with a tilt-angle range of 115 degrees, and can cover the entire panning distance in under two seconds with speeds that can be manually controlled or set to automatic. This unit features the ability to set 16 areas of interest and have the camera rotate between them automatically. This camera also features an 8 MB image buffer, a PCMCIA slot for wireless, good nighttime sensitivity with a minimum illumination of 0.18 Lux.

Technical Features:

  • Sensitivity: minimum illumination of 0.18 Lux
  • Effective pixels: up to 736 by 480 pixels
  • Zoom: 25x optical and 12x digital
  • Pan/Tilt: 340-degrees of panning, 115-degrees of tilt
  • Connection: 10/100 base-T Ethernet
The Sony SNC-RZ30N surveillance camera is a reliable, economical and high-quality solution for demanding interactive surveillance and is designed primarily for indoor use. User's should note, however, that the camera's image sensor may become permanently damaged if exposed to long hours of direct sunlight or halogen light, so the camera should not be mounted or pointed directly at the sun or other bright-light sources. This camera also requires a PC that is not included in this package in order to take advantage of the Internet functionality.

About Surveillance Camera Technical Features
Lux rating is the measurement used to indicate how sensitive a camera is to light, and stands for the level of light reflected off a piece of paper by a candle from one meter away. Thus a sensitivity of three would mean a camera could generate an acceptable picture of a piece-of-paper-sized object that was illuminated by the equivalent of three candles from one meter away. The lower the level, the better the camera's ability to work in low-light conditions. The camera's resolution should be greater than or equal to the resolution supported by the system's recorder or monitor. The S/N, or signal to noise ratio, is an important measure of a camera's quality. A poor camera, low-light conditions or poor wiring causes "noise" which consumes processing power and disk space. A camera with a wide dynamic range is ideal, especially for recording areas in which both indoor and outdoor light are present. CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors provide high-quality images that are less susceptible to noise. CMOS (complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors offer less image quality, but are usually more cost-effective and energy efficient.

About IP Cameras
An IP camera can be used to project images and video directly through a computer's Web browser for remote monitoring. An IP camera, unlike a web cam, contains the IP and Web page within it and can often be added to a network without additional configuration or software. Combined with a network video recorder, an IP camera can be used to construct a reliable video surveillance system.

About Pan/Tilt Cameras
A Pan/Tilt Camera has the ability to pan ("move" horizontally), or tilt ("move" vertically). IP cameras often have pan/tilt capability. A pan/tilt camera is ideal for monitoring of situations that need a continual real-time adjustment of the views.

Product Description

Combining network functionality with Pan/Tilt/Zoom (PTZ) capability, the SNC-RZ30N camera takes remote monitoring and general IT applications to the next step by offering the flexibility to see almost anything within the camera's range and field-of-view over an ordinary TCP/IP network. By simply using a popular web browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer, images and the PTZ movement of the SNC-RZ30N camera can be controlled using a PC at any location and at any time without the need for any additional software or plug-ins. In addition, installation and operation of the SNC-RZ30N camera is easy thanks to its browser based set-up menu and user-friendly GUI (Graphic User Interface). The versatile and flexible SNC-RZ30N is packed with incredible features and comes in a sleek, compact and lightweight design that can be ceiling mounted or placed on a flat surface. The SNC-RZ30N is an ideal choice for virtually any IP remote monitoring application! If the SNC-RZ30N camera is installed on a desktop, captured still images and composite video output images will be inverted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Effective Web Cam, January 6, 2008
When this camera arrived I set it down on the living room floor and connected the network cable to my home network switch. I could not access the camera using a computer running vista but could with the mac and an XP machine. I installed the java controls and the camera was easy to control. Next was to configure the network router to allow access from outside. The documentation included with the camera is adequate but the documentation included with the slingbox was easier to follow. After that I mounted the camera on a tripod and set it at the window. I could control the camera with the computer at the office. At Christmas I tried unsuccessfully to access the camera from an XP machine at my sister's house in another state.
