Maybe my expectations are too high from previous experience with Boos work islands, but the quality of the wood on this cutting board leaves much to be desired. Even though it says it's maple, it's not a hard maple, seems somewhat porous, and every knife cut shows in the soft wood. After only a few uses, it needs sanding. The look and design with the rounded feet is great, which is why I gave it two stars instead of one, but not enough to make up for the other shortcomings. I'm wondering if I should have looked for the words hardrock maple and paid more money for a different cutting board. As it is, it's obvious this product won't last long.

This product did not hold up, I ordered it in Feb. and it has already come unglued. I never put it in the dishwasher and only washed it by hand.John Boos 12-Inch Square Maple Cutting Board with Feet

This 12 inch cutting board is great for making meals for two. I actually own the larger, 18" x 12" x 2.25" board as well but having since moved to a smaller apartment with less counter space, the large board took up too much space in my kitchen to be used for making two person meals on a daily basis. I bought the 12" board and couldn't be happier with the size. It's perfectly square and comes with four feet that protect the bottom of the board from water and food juices, a feature I really love about the board. I chose to go with a Boos block because they're made from maple, a softer wood that is easy on knives and tends not to dull knives as quickly as bamboo and plastic cutting boards. If you have a set of high quality knives I would definitely go with a maple cutting board to extend the lifespan of your knives. The board will show knife marks over time and use, but I find this fairly normal since the wood is softer than bamboo. I've uploaded photos comparing the 12 inch square maple cutting board to the larger 18x12 Boos block I also own for size reference.

Cleaning:
One thing I do recommend for cleaning the board is to use a wet paper towel and wipe down the board after you're done using it instead of throwing it into the sink and running it under water. I have never run it directly under water or used dish detergent on the board, since the wood can soak up the chemicals from the dish detergent. I noticed that when cutting green onions or any herb, the smell will tend to "soak" into the board. When this happens I take some slices of lemon and sprinkle some coarse salt over the board and rub it in a few times with the lemon/ salt scrub mixture. I let it sit for about 5 minutes and then wipe it off.

Jan-2014 update:

I am sad to say that the board is quickly showing signs that these blocks are not what they used to be. John Boos did replace the first board and the second board is doing the same thing. The bands of wood are glued together and I am finding that every single joint is starting to split. I use the mystery oil to treat the block.

I reduced my rating to two stars and we will likely continue to use the block until we see signs that water or food down in the cracks is an issue. After we are done with this block we will be looking for a new wood block from another manufacturer.

Original review:

We love this board. We had one for more than 10 years. It was time for the old to go and in with the new. Nothing was wrong with the old board that a bit more maintenance with mineral oil would have prevented. No splitting or failing of the product. Just good ole day in and day out use, lots of washing and the wood started to look old.

The old one looks like like the picture from the manufacturer. The other user-provided pictures do not match what is shipped. They are wrong! Also, the new blocks don't have the 1 inch butcher block look, the bands of wood are now more like 3 or 4 inches each. The board is 12 x 12 as described and has the four round feet.

We also bought their mineral oil and promptly treated the board. It looks like one bottle of their mineral oil is going to last a long time. I think it is worth the convenience to have it shipped with the board rather than go find a less expensive bottle of pure mineral (the food grade stuff).

I also have worked with their customer care. They are awesome. John Boos is a good company.

I bought a couple of these. They are very good quality. You have to work at keeping them nice though. I oil mine about once a month with mineral oil. Don't use cooking oil, because it will go rancid. If you don't oil them, the cutting boards will split.

This board is just what I needed for my counter work space. It is solid wood with just right wood feet to lift it off the counter. The compact size makes it easy to wash and put it to drain in the dish rack. I know it will give many years of good service like the other Boos products I have.

Bought this cutting board and found it started cracking after two months use. I had a wood cutting board that lasted 20 years before it started to crack so it's not an issue of knowing how to care for a board. This one has a very open grain. When I used the oil from the same company the board soaked it up immediately. After three coats of oil it still acted like a dry sponge. This board was cleaned and dried after each use and never left soaking in water. The board has not been used a great deal but is starting to get fuzzy due to the open grain and seemingly soft wood. It is now starting to crack in four places and will most likely come apart in a few months. As I stated my previous cutting board lasted 20 years. So this one is definitely not very well made. Don't waste your money.
