This is the best flan mix in the market. Jello is nowhere near close to it(they forgot to add egg yolk?), and Goya is just horrible (starchy consistency, extremely fake flavoring). It's an old brand and recipe, and they haven't changed it at all since I've been eating this ever since I was a child. Royal's caramel sauce is perfect, slightly burned and sweet. If you add egg yolks and cream to the mix, you'll get a super decadent treat. Don't forget, the flan is only as good as the milk that you cook it with. So if you cook it with skim milk, it's going to taste it! Whenever I visit my family abroad, I have to carry cases of this stuff because it's popular with adults and kids.

This wasn't as good as the real thing. Honestly I wasn't expecting much but for the price and reviews I was hoping. The box came crushed and torn up so right away I was concerned. The flan did not firm up very well and melted within an hour on the buffet table.

Royal is the best flan mix way above all the other mixes.
Much better than Goya or Jello.
Best flavor and best texture.
Made from scratch is sometimes better but it depends on your recipe and your skill.
The type of milk you use has a great effect on the outcome. Skim, 1%, 2%, whole.
Generally the less fat in the milk the less firm the custard.
I prefer it less firm.

The past reviewers who gave this product a bad review probably didn't read and followed through with the packaging instructions. Yes, there's no egg in the ingredients and there is nothing wrong with the mix. I should know. My family has bought this brand of flan mix ever since I was a kid and we never had any problems with the texture or taste. You can make flan just by using the basic steps of mixing the flan mix and milk or, and it says this in the box, FOR A RICHER DESSERT USE AND COMBINE TWO BEATEN EGG YOLKS AND 3 1/2 CUPS OF MILK WITH THE MIX. I've always followed these instructions and the flan always comes out delicious. They can't beat authentic homemade flan, but these are pretty close enough.

My wife and I visit a certain local Mexican restaurant because it has quite good food. However, perhaps the real reason is that it has some of the best flan desert cups we've ever found. Incredible! As such, my wife got the idea that we might have home-made flan and she brought home a few packets of Royal Flan with Caramel Sauce mix (family size). She indicated that it was easy to prepare and made up eight little desert bowls. Well, the flan was not bad at all. In fact, it was rather good. The only problem was it just couldn't live up to the incredible flan we were used to from the little Mexican restaurant. Such is life.
