Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

You expect cheap gags from a Rob Schneider movie, and The Animal delivers in the best possible way. Schneider plays Marvin Mange, a schlub of a police file clerk who drives off a cliff and is horribly mangled--only to wake up not only whole, but feeling better than he ever has in his life. He suddenly develops strange powers that lead to him being praised as a super cop. Unfortunately, his powers are the result of a scientist's bizarre experiment--and before long, some side effects start to take over his life. It's hard to put a finger on Schneider's appeal, but he's got something. He can get away with tasteless jokes about bestiality and bodily functions because... well... he's sort of helplessly sympathetic, and somehow this actually makes him funny. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

He might not look like much but it's what's inside that counts. Comic genius Rob Schneider (Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo Big Daddy) TV's Survivor Colleen Haskell John C. McGinley (Any Given Sunday The Rock) and Edward Asner (The Bachelor JFK) star in the most outrageous and hysterical comedy of the year. When evidence clerk Marvin Mange (Schneider) answers a 911 call of a burglary in progress his dream of one day becoming a cop seems to be coming true. But a freak car accident en route to the crime leaves Marvin and his dream a shattered mess. When Marvin awakens a week later he finds that a deranged scientist secretly used animal organs to rebuild his broken body. Energized by his new and improved parts Marvin achieves instant fame as a super-cop until his animal instincts start taking over his body at all the wrong times. And when he finds himself falling for the lovely and sexy Rianna (Haskell) it's animal magnetism at its craziest in the funniest and wildest comedy of the year! Don't miss Rob Schneider in Big Daddy.DVD FeaturesDeleted ScenesComedy Centrals Reel Comedy FeaturetteThe Making OfWidescreen PresentationLanguages: English (Dolby Digital 5.1)Subtitles: English FrenchSystem Requirements:Running Time 84 MinsFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: UNRATED UPC: 043396103245 Manufacturer No: 10324

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than you'd think, October 22, 2001
By Brian Winkeler (Oklahoma City, OK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Animal (Special Edition) (DVD)
Critics have pretty much universally trashed all movies written by/starring SNL alumni from the early '90s, but 'The Animal' sits up there with 'Billy Madison' and 'Happy Gilmore' as a solidly absurdist comedy. While not a classic, there's enough sustained "smart" dumb humor to make it definitely worthwhile. I've seen too many movies that catered towards the Lowest Common Denominator at every turn. While this one was definitely sold as such, it's much more a case of dumb humor for smart people.

And that Colleen is too darn cute. Her awkward performance was saved in the editing (watch as no dialogue shots stay on her for too long... if at all), but the camera definitely loves her.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Laughs, but Mainly Mind Numbing, November 22, 2001
This review is from: The Animal (Special Edition) (DVD)
The Animal had a really stupid plot, but I thought I would go and rent it anyway. I found that the movie had the humor, but was lacking a storyline, that seemed reasonable.

The Animal is about a looser, who wants to be a cop. But every time he takes the final exam (the physical part), he always fails. He cant seem to get a date, or get any respect from anyone. (Including a group of kids at the police station, which is hilarious). Then some man finds him after a horrific accident. And replaces most of his bodies parts with animal parts. Thus making him able to run, jump, swim, hear, and smell like an animal.

This film isnt too bad, but its not worth buy. One viewing is enough. If you want to see a good Rob Schneider film, go and rent "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalow". Most of The Animal is predictable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!, December 1, 2002
This review is from: The Animal (Special Edition) (DVD)
Rob Schneider is under-rated for being one of many SNL castoffs. People say the SNL bunch is untalented and rely on physical, stupid humor to float their movies--yeah that's true, but with the exception of Rob Schneider. Schneider is the ultimate goofy nice guy, and maybe it's because of that other goofy nice guy, Adam Sandler, we just skip over him because of the deficiency in the category. Maybe we are skipping some of the funniest material ever made.

The Animals main faults are in the sad casting of Colleen from Survivor as his love interest--this woman cannot act; the reliance on bestiality to catch a few laughs--which I personally don't mind, I think it's hilarious to see him smack a goat's buttox as long as its a female; and the mediocre job of directing. Otherwise, for plot, it's hilarious.
