Best Documentary Short Finalist

Product Description

Growin' a Beard is a documentary that follows the men of Shamrock, TX - and a hairy outsider- as they compete in the town's annual Beard Growing Contest. Since 1938, it's been a tradition in Shamrock to grow a beard from New Year's Day to St. Patrick's Day. But not just any beard - A Donegal beard. A Donegal grows along the jowl and chin with no mustache - like the Amish or Leprachaun's. Then, on the morning of St. Patrick's Day right before the big parade, they face off on Main Street Route 66 and are judged to see who has the best Donegal. In this year's contest the competition is fierce. There is Richard Smith who only enters - and wins - every 10 years. Bill Howe takes little green pills that turn his beard green. Roy Wardlow paints his green. And there is a dark horse competing. His name is Scotty McAfee. He has an amazing ability to grow hair and has finally found the contest to prove it. The DVD also comes packaged with the soundtrack performed by the Gourds.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE FILM! THE GOURDS! THE BEST! What a surprise., October 31, 2003
By A Customer
From the film to the DVD extras to the amazing interface, not to mention the full, original soundtrack by Austin, TX super-group, The Gourds, this DVD is great. This is a gift anyone would love to get. You can't duplicate this kind of authenticity. We're Shamrock bound!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, December 11, 2003
By Steve Prichett (Baltimore, MD) - See all my reviews
I loved this movie and I am not usually the documentary type. Very funny. Great characters in the town. Worth it for sure. Great music to boot. My kids love the music! We play the music all the time for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It!, August 27, 2008
The movie is great for all! You will find the people to be real and just enjoying fun and life! One of the men is my Dad-Roy. I think he is the coolest man around and I know he does color his beard green for the contest and I think he looks great! It is fun to watch. ENJOY!
