Give the Wabash people a call. They will ask you when you bought the popper and they will register your product. Then they will send you a brand new lid no questions asked. They will continue to do this for the next 25 years. I wish the entire gear system was made of metal, but with impeccable customer service like Wabash provides, I can overlook that.

As for the popper itself, the other reviews pretty much cover it. More fun and healthier than microwave popcorn and easier to store than a hot air job. I use 1/8 cup olive oil to 1/2 cup popcorn and don't even bother turning the gear until I hear the first kernel explode. I'm hoping this will save wear and tear for next time. I melt a tablespoon or two of butter over the top just 'cause I like the taste and add a little salt right in the kettle (be sure to use a potholder...it's hot!). Once the popcorn is gone, I fit the lid back on and stick it back under the cabinet. I don't even bother to wipe it out. Keeps it nice and seasoned!

This is the best popcorn popper ever! It's easy, really fast and fun. Every kernel pops up light and fluffy. We used the pre-measured movie theater packs and we think the popcorn tastes better than what we get at the movies. We also popped a store bought corn and it also popped up light and fluffy with no kernels unpopped. We are not fans of microwave popcorn and we usually popped in a pot on the stove. The Whirley-pop makes a better popcorn and is so much faster and easier because of the material it is made of and the way the steam is vented. We love it and never have a problem eating the full batch.

I bought this Whirley-Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper as a gift and compared it to the quality of my Back to Basics Popcorn Popper. It stands up pretty well, although I think my Back to Basics is a better model, based on the Whirley's lightweight stirring mechanism and removable lid. (Plus I like the fact that I was able to buy a red Back to Basics popper.) My Back to Basics lid doesn't lift off (each side simply lifts up), but actually the removable lid makes the Whirley-Pop easier to clean.

As for cleaning, it isn't necessary to dunk it in soap suds every time you use it. You can easily wipe it out with a couple of paper towels right after use, and go over it with a soapy sponge every 5-6 uses.

Although it's nice to have the premeasured packets of popcorn, oil, and salt that come with this unit, it isn't necessary to keep buying them. It's very expensive compared to my method. My "recipe" for homemade popcorn is 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, 1/4 cup of Gregg's popping oil (not widely available, sadly, but you can use any popping oil or go with all vegetable or all coconut), and 3/4 cup popcorn*, with 1 tsp of Flavacol butter-flavored popcorn salt on top, then set the unit on the burner at med-high. Stir when you hear it start to pop, and keep stirring until it's done. The whole process takes about the same amount of time as fake-tasting microwaved popcorn, and it tastes SO much better. Top with clarified butter or popcorn topping, if you like.

*I highly recommend Wabash Baby White Popcorn, also available on Amazon. It pops up very tender and hulless. It's tiny, and that's why I use 3/4 cup - if you use a normal-sized popcorn, you'll probably need only 1/2 cup.

I bought two of these popcorn popper sets as gifts last year and both were liked very much by the recipients. I bought four this time, including one for myself as I'm not a fan of microwave or hot air popcorn. The popper works great other than once in a while a kernel will get stuck under the turning wand. A little shake of the pan will usually dislodge it. Using the included popcorn/oil/seasoning packets, every single kernel will usually pop. Interesting that the enclosed book says not to season until after popping but the seasoning is included IN the popcorn packet with no such admonition. The packets make a full kettle of popcorn with, though I haven't measured it, about 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels. This is easily enough to serve three or four people. It is not as easy to clean as the blurbs indicate because oil does get into the hinges of the cover so I'd pass on 'wiping clean' and give the entire thing a good hot soapy wash to make sure you don't end up with rancid oil in the cover.

We have been using these popcorn makers for over 10 years, and for one reason or another we've probably gone through I'd say 3. Usually its our fault, we leave it on the stove too long, or something got lost, but we have always had a good product. We just had to do a replacement because our current one broke (again our fault it was too full), so we bought it again. Well, I don't know what changed from 2 or 3 years ago to now, but these things, which are so good for so long, are now "cheap" imitations of themselves. After one use 2 of them broke, one just fell apart, the other in regular use. I'm pretty sure there are probably better ones out there by now, and I for one will start looking. Its kind of a shame, this was a great product for years... My advise, buy with caution, if you've had them before you will be disappointed, if you've never had one, there are probably better...
