The Ethiopiques series has produced 16 cd's prior to this one. There were two outstanding Mahmoud cd's, great urban collections, two instrumental classics,and other gratifying cd's. But if you want to understand modern Ethiopian music - this is the cd you must listen to.
Tlahoun Gessesse IS Ethiopia's number one singer EVER. I am almost sure this will be agreed upon by most Ethiopians in Ethiopia or abroad. His voice, his masterful delivery, his phrasing, his song seletion - all made him a legend that could not be surpassed.
The songs on this cd are, in my opinion, his best recordings. He was still young in the early seventies, but already a national icon. he used the best musicians and arrangers, and gave every song a unique interpretation that became a standard.
I love all songs, but I could mention some that stand out a little, such as the amazing "Lantchi Biy" and the two versions of "Kulun Mankwalèsh". But, on any given day any of the songs may win.
I believe I speak for many when I say that this is a must cd for anyone interested in Ethiopian music.

...I'm not sure I understand the hype over this one. I like it a lot but I cannot put it on the same exalted level as Vol.'s 1, 3, 6,7,8,9 and 14. It might be something like a preference for Sam Cooke over James Brown...or it might not. I'm going to live with it some more. Track 4 is extraordinary. Anyway, you can't go wrong buying an Ethiopiques disc...

I'm an American but was blessed to marry a beautiful Ethiopian woman. Through her I've been introduced to Ethiopian music. While visiting the country I listened to tons of Ethiopian music but didn't know the names of the artist. Once we returned to the States I searched for some of the songs. I finally found Tilahoun and the rest is history. If you like great music and a wonderful voice this is the c.d. you should grab. Trust me....You will not be disappointed.

I can almost say... I want to buy most it if not all of the Ethiopiques version, since most of these songs are exotic jewel to me. This CD especially tracks 8, 9, 10, etc... have wonderful lyrics & melody...lovely... Tlahoun Gessess is Ethiopian James Brown.... Thank you amazon for allowing us to come & sample these songs...

This is one of the best Ethiopian CD's available. In this album, Tlahoun sings in his most beautiful voice, some of the claissics of Ethiopian music. I for one believe he is the best singer to come out of that country. For all those Ethiopians living abroad, this is the album to invoke the memories from back home. Truely nostalgic album.

The first time I heard the songs, my heart aches so much, I was carried back to Mojo, Ethiopia momentarily, listening the tracks with my siblings. Tilahun Gesese is a legend; album after album, he captured peoples heart like no other before or after him. I am so grateful to Ethiopiques making them available to us.
