Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber host another winning episode in this Christian-lite animated series aimed at 3-9 year olds, combining parable and parody in two lessons about fear. After watching a scary Frankencelery movie, Jr. Asparagus works through his fears of darkness and monsters to learn that "God is bigger than the Boogie Man." In Daniel and the Lions' Den, our cast of rollicking vegetables performs a highly engaging adaptation of the classic Bible story. Larry the Cucumber stars as God's humble and faithful servant Daniel. A supporting cast of green onions and asparagus--wisemen gone bad--sing their way to Daniel's fate: "We could use him as a footstool or a table to play Scrabble on then tie him up and beat him up and throw him out of Babylon." Co-creators Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki expertly combine classical, rock, jazz, and funk music with bold, energetic 3-D computer animation and plenty of witty dialogue. --Liane Thomas

Product Description

In these two stories, kids learn that God is bigger than the boogie-man, and can even close the mouths of lions! Tales from the Crisper What happens when 5-year-old Junior Asparagus watches a Frankencelery movie that's a little too scary for him? Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber come to the rescue with a rollicking song, teaching Junior that God is bigger than anything he might be afraid of. Daniel and the Lion's Den The second segment takes us to ancient Babylon as the VeggieTales characters stage a musical adaptation of a classic Bible story. Larry the Cucumber, playing the role of Daniel, finds himself in deep trouble thanks to the King's conniving wisemen, played with zest by a trio of slippery scallions. In the end, Daniel learns that even in the lion's den, he is still in God's hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 Years Later It's Still Great, October 28, 2003
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
VeggieTales launched 10 years ago with this video, which includes two shorter segments. The first, "Tales from the Crisper," teaches Jr. Asparagus that he has nothing to fear because "God is Bigger then the Boogie Man." The second retells the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den with songs feature Larry as the hero and Archibald Asparagus as King Darius. (Mr. Nezzer hadn't been created yet.) In between is the very first silly song, "The Water Buffalo Song."

Watching it again this weekend, I was struck by two things. First, how much fun this video is. With Jr. they perfectly captured a little kid and his logic and created some truly funny moments with talk about the slime monster. Although the funniest moment belongs to Daniels chatter as he's being carried to the lion's den. The second is how far they and the technology have come. By today's standards, the animation is bad. Their recent projects with bigger budgets are much better looking. However, that doesn't affect the fun at all. I almost guarantee that you'll have one song or another stuck in your head after watching this.

If there's a better way to teach kids Bible truths then this series, I sure don't know what it is. They're truly entertaining for the entire family. Heck, I buy them and I don't even have kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Video With Christian Lessons For Children, May 2, 1998
By A Customer
High quality computer animation and Christian themes has made this one of our family's favorite videos in only 3 short days! Bob (a tomato) and Larry (a cucumber) are vegetables that our three pre-school age children laugh and sing along with as the characters explain there's no reason to be afraid of the dark because "God is bigger than the Boogie-man." Larry also stars in the title role of "Daniel and the Lion's Den," a great story told in a manner and fashion for young viewers to understand and relate to. The video closes out with a short scripture for young viewers which helps children learn biblical verse and how it can apply to their young experiences. As soon as other videos are released (currently only one other "Veggie Tale" video is available out of a series of nine) we will quickly be adding them to our collection. A definite must for parents who set high standards (quality and morally) for what their children watch if they must watch TV. We can't say enough good things about the video. END

5.0 out of 5 stars Who knew that scallions could be so entertaining?, May 9, 2000
By A Customer
Purchase this video not for the first story, but the second. The first story isn't one of my favorites, perhaps because it isn't very Biblical. It tells the story of Jr. Asparagus being scared of a television Frankenstein that looks curiously like a piece of celery.

However, the second story - a clever re-telling of Daniel in the Lion's Den makes the entire video worth owning. The scallion song and dance routine is among my favorite in the entire Veggie Tales series of videos. The creators have done an excellent job of song-writing, animating, and story-telling. Great fun!
