Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Scholastic excels with this trio of timeless children's stories, artistically adapted to video, celebrating friendship and understanding. The most recognized of the bunch is Don Freeman's Corduroy, a live-action rendition of the beloved bear who sits on a department store shelf, in need of a button and a friend. He finds both, but not before an adventurous romp during the night shift in the darkened store. In the stylistic story Yo! Yes?, Chris Raschka's illustrations spring to life when two solitary boys--one playing basketball, the other plain lonely--meet face to face. Their simple interactions convey the sweet overtures of a budding friendship. In the last tale, a peaceful village of mice gets into an uproar over the ominous news, Here Comes the Cat! As the message reverberates, panic ensues until a surprise ending reminds us that sometimes our greatest fears can become the most, er, delicious opportunities. Included is a "read along" feature and bonus story, The Rainbabies. (Ages 2 to 5) --Lynn Gibson

5.0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful world!, March 13, 2004
By Doe Waters (Arlington Heights, IL United States) - See all my reviews
I bought this dvd for the Corduroy story. After checking it out of the library repeatedly for my 3 year old twins, I decided to buy it. What a surprise the other stories were! My son loved "Here Comes The Cat" and watched it four times at his first viewing. "Yo Yes" is a delightful story about friendship. However, the best surpise was the beautiful and touching "The Rainbabies" described on the package as a bonus. It is the star of the dvd. These are all wonderful stories and it makes me long for the world portrayed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, March 15, 2004
By A Customer
This superb video will delight viewers of all ages. Each of the stories here is heartwarming, but the classic "Corduroy" is a marvelous treat for everyone, including this 50-year-old child. The producers should be commended for this wonderful work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic, May 10, 2007
We had Corduroy on VHS when I was little. We used to put it on when it was raining or needed to be entertained. We watched so intently - Mum loved it because we went dead quiet from the moment it went on - listening and watching intently.
Time passed, we grew up, moved out of home, got married, then the pitter patter of tiny feet. We asked Mum to pull out Corduroy to show the next generation ... and she had to admit that she'd lent it to a friend who had accidentally taped over it!
I searched for it on the net and could only find this version. From the cover I thought it was a cartoon version but figured it was better than nothing so ordered it. When it arrived, we put it in the DVD player crossing our fingers that it would have some of the magic of the original. We held our breath ... and were delighted; it was the original 1986 version of Corduroy!!
As for the other stories? Just icing on the cake!
This DVD is a must for any kids (and grown up kids) collection!
