Editorial Reviews

Los Angeles Times

"Loose, engaging and meditative without foundering in mawkishness...has the feel of brothers playing songs to each other."

Product Description

Bright Eyes and Neva Dinova, both from Omaha, are longtime friends and mutual fans. Both bands have supported each other for years - long before the overwhelming mass notoriety that has enveloped Bright Eyes. Talk of doing a joint release has been bouncing back and forth between them for what seems like eons - yet hectic schedules have continuously delayed the project. Finally, they found some time. Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst plays guitar and sings backup on the Neva Dinova songs, and Neva Dinova plays some music and sings backup on the Bright Eyes tunes. The result is a mystifying, infectiously melodic blend of the two bands' styles that will leave no fan dissatisfied. Recorded by Conor Oberst and Jake Bellows in July 2003 and mixed by Mike Mogus shortly thereafter, "One Jug of Wine"...also features members of The Faint, Cursive, Rilo Kiley and more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good..., July 29, 2004
This CD is amazing. However, if you are a Bright eyes fanatic like myself, you should be warned that only 2 of the songs are sung by conor. All the songs are great, and the CD is very well worth purchasing, but you have to come into it with an open mind, because it's not all Bright Eyes, it's mostly Neva Dinova.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, September 9, 2005
I've never listened to an EP as many times as I have this one. The thing that startled me most about it was that I liked the Neva Dinova songs more than the ones crooned by Oberst. As a fan of any band, I think you tend to gravitate to their songs more than any other, and I thought that would happen for this album. Not the case. It starts with Tripped, which may start to find it's way onto mix-tapes without you even realizing it, and ends with the last refrain of Spring Cleaning, guaranteed to be something you hum for the rest of the day. Some of the best work from both of these artists, and it sounds like they just worked so damn well together that it leaves you wishing for more colab work in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best album I own., December 3, 2006
While it's true Bright Eyes only performs two songs on the split, fans of Connor will find themselves easily falling in love with Neva's smooth, similarly meloncholy style. It is blues at it's bluest, capturing life at some pretty sad points. However, the rolling style in which they sing, just makes it so easy to learn the words and sing along. I emphasize that it is very sing-a-long accessible. Even though the content is sad, there's something about singing along that feels so...uplifting. It's a great album to listen to when you've got something on your shouders, cause singing along just lets you- put it down.
