This is a super coarse stone, and will take a ton of material off a blade. It is exactly what I was looking for as even with the coarse regular stone it was taking too long to reprofile a blade. The Gatco system is still a little frustrating to work with as it doesn't give you the perfection you would find with an Edge Pro Apex or the like, but at the price point it is a handy tool, especially for someone not great at freehand sharpening.

I don't know why these are impossible to find in the store but it's critical in taking a very dull knife toward a razors edge. I make knives and burn through standard stones far too quickly. Works well...Gotta love the Internet!

I accidently posted a review of this item under the Gatco set. So here goes again: this diamond hone finally brought back the edge on my favorite filet knife that had become a problem over the years. (Steel TOO hard?) Just a few strokes with course diamond and it was ready to be honed to razor edge. Love it.

If you dabble in super-hard knife steels like D2, VG10, S30v etc, you need a good diamond hone to cut the angle you desire. The Gatco system is excellent! If your kit doesn't come with this coarse diamond hone, I would recommend you purchase this one. It is way faster and more durable than any stone.
