When I unpacked this drill stand I was initially impressed..solid, sturdy and all metal. Then I came to use it and wow!!! What a total disappointment!!!!
The head sticks and jams when being lowered, not at all the smooth motion required for 'precision' drilling and to make matters worse it kicks off by 1-2mm to the right as it passes the midway down point.
Using it to drill carbon fibre sheet and up to 3mm aluminium and had to give up as way to unreliable and not worth the hassle.
Another $100 wasted...
-
I have revised my original 1 Star(*) rating for this drill stand to a 4 star (****) rating,
-
I have completly stripped down and buffed out all the paint from inside the collars that were gripping on the main shaft, given evey metal surface a liberal coat of fine 'servo' grease and also squeezed the guide forks a little tighter onto the brass 'olive' to prevent the kick-off's that was occurring.
-
Now works like it should have right out of the box...smooth motion, no gripping, sticking or kick-off's of any amount.
-
Happy to have spent the $100, but happier that I resisted temptation to ditch the whole within the first week.
-
Cheers
Matt

Those of us who have become increasingly peevish about the continuing slide in quality of Dremel tools, and have resisted blowing big bucks for dental quality RAM's, etc., should defect immediately to Proxxon. Comparing this stand to Dremel's is as a tool to a toy. The previous reviewer's reference to the collar clamp handle (visible to the left side in the pic) is correct-- a goofy piece of engineering, but only a minor annoyance.
I've become immediately attached to the whole Micromot 12 volt system-- my Dremel stuff seems crude by comparison. Get yourslf a model 50 Handpiece, the beefier power unit, and you can do your own root canal!!

My Proxxon Rotary Tool stand came last night. My wife wanted something to drill glass, and after reading the reviews here, it seemed the best choice.

Based on my experience, I'm elevating my rating to two stars only because I was able to modify it to make it usable - sort-of.

Opening the box, the parts were loose in the box, they had been in a plastic bag, but worked their way out thru a tear. Parts were also loose or had fallen off the stand. There was not even a simple instruction manual to tell you how to put it back together, but it was simple enough to figure out, except for one thing.

The vertical post had what appeared to be a set screw to hold it in place, but it had no head or recess and was screwed in flush. It took me a few minutes to see that the set screw was in backwards with the head inside against the post! I was able to work a allen wrench inside the post hole and turn the set screw out enough so that I could remove it the rest of the way with my fingers. Then, properly installed, I was able to secure the vertical post.(I wish that had been one of the parts to fall off during shipping!)

After finding where all the parts went that had fallen off during shipping, and getting it assembled, I pulled the handle down, and the drill kicked about 0.2 inches to the right as soon as I started moving it. It came down stiffly with spots that were binding. It had a lot of side play even when pulled completely down, at least 0.2 inches, totally unaceptable!

I adjusted and re-adjusted all the screws to no avail. Then I discovered the problem, a brass bushing guides the head as it moves downward, sliding down a flimsy post that could be easily bent, but looked reasonably straight.

Like the ease of setup and use of this drill stand. Several problems stand out. The vertical pole came loose after several uses, had to re-tighten the nut. Secondly, there is too much play such that accurate drilling is not possible. I could not figure out a way to get rid of the play or looseness of the stand when it holds the rotary instrument in place. The drill bit end moves at least 1-2 mm, which is quite a bit when working in small scale. That said I'm satisfied with my purchase. Also bought the Dremel brand drill stand, which had more plastic parts on it and made it feel "cheaper" than this stand. All in all this proxxon stand is more accurate and easier to use than the Dremel stand.

The Brass guide bushing and assembly is a very sloppy fit resulting in about .25" of play at the tool tip. I was hoping to use this in conjuction with the X-Y table to machine small parts and jewelry. Can't do it with this without mods. This item appeared to be very cheaply made and not of the quality I was expecting.

Too bad because the X-Y table and Rotary Tool are really nice.

I agree with a previous reviewer that;

"To summarize, the QC is poor to non-existent, and the design is just plain quirky.

I'd return it for another, but would not have hopes of finding the next one to be any better."

Don't expect that you can use this out of the box with their X-Y table to get the precision that you expect

Like many of the other reviewers I was prepared for problems when the package arrived and I heard the clanking sound of loose metal parts before opening the Amazon/Proxxon boxes. Fortunately no missing or broken parts, but a clue that this was not a top notch product. I purchased the stand to drill holes in beach glass using the Proxxon rotary tool equipped with hollow core diamond drills from Rio Grande supply. Two features were especially important in my plan for using the drill stand: first, sensitive response to hand operation (smooth, non-binding) and second, easy return to start position. Out-of-the-box performance failed on both accounts.

Using the suggestions of another reviewer, I first tried to smooth the response of the mechanism as the lever was depressed. I started by applying "Super Lube, Synthetic Grease" to the machined surfaces that move along the vertical steel post. I also added lubricant to the other moving/binding components. Eventually I could activate the lever and the mechanism would move smoothly without binding.

Next I wanted the mechanism to return to its start position without needing to add any additional restoring force on the actuation lever. Without the rotary tool installed, that functionality followed after I greased the bushings and other components. However, once I inserted the rotary tool into the drill stand holder, the spring did not have sufficient restoration force to return the mechanism to its starting position. This residual binding was most likely the result of the extra weight of the tool and its cantilever action. The mechanism would hang about 1/4" from the starting position.
