Royal Doulton, founded in 1815, is one of England's famed producers of fine bone china. They have established a reputation for incorporating modern sensibilities into designs inspired and informed by historical and natural imagery. Their Chanticlair pattern, a new design in 2004, has as its central inspiration the rooster, proud herald of dawn and a symbol of prosperous, bountiful county living.

The Criss-Cross line takes the Chanticlair rooster colors and abstracts them in a pattern evocative of farm-kitchen dishtowels. A simple, straight-sided, 12-ounce handled coffee mug, the Criss-Cross with Floral mug is painted with its signature hatchmark pattern in green and gold on the lower two-thirds of the mug; around the upper third, a hand-painted floral border uses a deep antique red with pastel green and rose foliage. The inner surface and handle are left in the original bone china shade, and the rim has a narrow double border of antique red with a thin green line just below it. The Criss-Cross abstraction of Chanticlair's rooster theme can be mixed and matched with pieces from any of the other Chanticlair variations such as Floral, Gold, or Sculpted. Other matching pieces specifically in the Chanticlair Criss-Cross pattern include a salad plate, a rimmed soup bowl, and a deeper, all-purpose bowl.

Chanticlair Criss-Cross dishes can be used in the freezer, microwave, or for warming in the oven. The Criss-Cross with Floral mug is also dishwasher safe.
