My kids and I are always on outdoor adventures, and to encourage their interest in the world around them, we have a variety of Kritter Keepers. We collect everything from bugs in the backyard to crayfish when we go to the beach. We have raised a variety of moths and butterflies in this cage (such as a woolly bear and a Monarch).

The Kritter Keeper is durable, but we have had ones crack from being handled too roughly. I also haven't had the lid fall off, but I certainly would not fill it with water and then pick it up only by the handle.

There is a nice little window on the top that has a hinge so you can open the Kritter Keeper just enough to feed or check on your critter without risking their escape. We have only kept creatures very short-term in the Kritter Keepers, especially the small size cage, since it is not big enough for most creatures. The only things we have kept in this more than a day or so are things like caterpillars, land snails, and other bugs/insects.

Overall a convenient little cage. We have several of these and we usually keep one in the car, and we always bring one on our adventures, from kayaking to hiking.

I got a scorpion in one of these.
Good space and depth for a smaller insect.
Perfect size if you have a pet that is 2-4 inches. It's comfortable in here!

I took the handle off since I will never use it, and it looked annoying.
Not hard to take it off, just need to remove it from the small groves.

Edit: If interested, these types of lids are spray paint friendly if you want all your lids to be matching! Easy. Take off the lid, spray paint and let it dry for 24 hours.
I would recommend this for a medium sized subadult Tarantula or something along the size of that.
Good product, still working good, sturdy!

I bought one of these locally when I rescued a chipmunk. It was perfect because it locks and has breathing holes. I ordered another one in case I rescue another animal that is tiny. I placed two washcloths in mine and some food in the corner and it was perfect for the few days the critter was recovering before wildlife rehab treated him and released him back to the wild.

The cage I received on Amazon had a purple lid and is perfect! I have it sitting in the garage just in case another creature needs to be rescued!

The holes in the top make this unusable (without modification) for containing many insects.

The slats that you can see in the picture are big enough for many bugs to escape. What you can't see in the picture, is that for some reason the designers decided to add 2 much larger holes on one side of the top...

These holes are big enough to allow a Yellowjacket to escape. (Ask me how I know.)

Make no mistake, you shouldn't try to keep animals in the Kritter Keeper indefinitely if they are of any real size (larger than a few inches) or if they are fish. However, these containers are absolutely ideal for insects and other creepy-crawlies like spiders, centipedes, worms, and any other "bug". I highly recommend these for people who catch bugs outdoors in warm weather. Great for kids!

By the way, I wouldn't rely on that handle. It looks a tad flimsy. Carry the Keeper by its sides.

This item has an "unintended" use.....we raise monarch butterflies and this size is perfect for raising the larva to chrysalis stage to maturity to release.
The caterpillar climbs to the top, weaves the chrysalis, hangs and emerges to monarch form. After the wings are dry and it flaps regularly we go outside and release it to a milkweed flower. Right now we own 4. This year we raised and released 16.

My son loves these for collecting bugs in. It would also be suitable for small frogs or lizards, though I wouldn't want to keep them permanently in this set up. We ordered them after he tried to keep a large preying mantis he caught in a smaller container and I was concerned that it couldn't properly turn around. There is enough space to create a nice habitat for all manner of creepy crawlies and the handle and lid are sturdy even with a fair amount of weight inside. One of the first ones we ordered was missing the handle. We were able to exchange it no problem and a new one arrived just a couple of days later.

The plastics this is made out of, and the mechanism by which the hatch and main lid open and close destine it for failure. 1) Ours arrived with a corner cracked. This would be hard to avoid, as it is brittle acrylic plastic. 2) The top hatch will only open and close several times before one side or the other breaks (tabs or lip). 3) The lid is very hard to get on and off. Yes, a creature should be able to stay inside securely but my kids cannot get it open nor closed without me. And this is a product for children, I would imagine, 95% of the time.
