I board dogs in my home and my old Staywell pet door got chewed by a zealous Labrador, so I had to replace it. This newer version fits precisely in the the hole made by the older version, and it looks spiffier with a see-thru panel, but the pastic has been upgraded to something harder and more brittle, and the magnets are stronger. As an odd result, my two tabby cats and small Pomeranian dog were actually afraid of it for a few weeks because the 'flapflap' sound was much louder than before, and it takes more pressure for them to push their heads against it to open. I hadn't expected that I'd have to retrain them! The cats caught on quicker than the dog. In general, this is a very reliable product and the magnets work well to keep out drafts. I had my former Staywell door for more than 12 years before it got chewed, so I can recommend this company with no reservation.

I use these pet doors for both my dogs & my cats. They're the best I have found. And when it comes time to replace one, I just pop the old one out & the new one fits right in. My dogs hit them at full speed, so eventually the door gives out. But it still takes a few years for them to wear out.

They don't last forever -- one dog chewed one up and the last one wore out after 10 years. I haven't seen anything better, but they are built reasonably and work just fine. The large model seems appropriate for dogs up to about 80 pounds (thinking retriever type body size). I've used these with 4 different dogs and they all learned to use it very quickly. The current dog learned to use it when she was 3 months old and under 20 pounds. Treats, encouragement, and some help make the learning process go quickly.

Unfortunately, you can't believe the picture on the staywell box. Border Collies and English Springer Spaniels do not easily fit through the door flap ...unless they are on the very small & skinny side. Picture a contortionist going through a small opening because that's exactly how a 35lb dog will look going through the door flap - they fit but only just and with some work to get through. If the dog weighs any more than that, good luck making them squeeze through the narrow opening.
The flap is made out of plastic and has a cheap plastic "rod" system that supposedly holds the door flap in place. Two days later and the plastic is broken. Definitely not worth your money. We tried the larger, too, and had the same issue ...big enough for our dog, but broke within a short-time after installation.

I have three different size dogs, 15, 34, and 65 lbs. I have the large size Original Staywell Pet door mounted in a wooden storm door to my attached garage. During warm weather, the dogs can come and go as they please. They all manage just fine with the size of the door. The door has been installed for several years, with only one problem. One winter, I got lazy and tried to close the door with my foot when the door was blocked by some snow. In the cold, the plastic cracked in the corner. I fixed this by adding a backing plate, and the door is still working just fine. I have the grey/opaque plastic door. Maybe the clear/white is not as robust, but mine has been working well for years. I'm very satisfied.

Although my maltipoo uses other dog doors without a problem, she HATES this one and won't use it. However, If that was the only problem, it wouldn't be worth mentioning. This is a piece of junk. The door is difficult to open for my dog, who is strong for her size and has a lot of energy. If an adult has trouble opening the door, you know it's gonna be hard for a dog. When it does manage to open, it gets stuck open. You know, in case you'd like to have squirrels/mice/raccoons in your house. Finally, the plastic/magnet flap is loud when it opens and startles the dog.
I bought this product based on the strong reviews of others, but cannot comprehend how ANYONE would think this is a good use of money. Maybe I got a lemon?

We've had this dog door for a few weeks. My dog is too scared to go through it.
I have tried treats - both setting them on the inside or outside of the dog door.
Tried holding the dog door open while offering his favorite foods on the other side, and talking gently.
Tried throwing his toys through the door while holding it open,
Tried masking taping it open for a few days. - This let in every fly and mosquito in the neighborhood.
I'm sure this door is great, but my dog is a big scaredy cat.
