These medium gauge strings are just about right for playing clawhammer/frailing style. I don't necessarily know that Ernie Ball strings are any better quality than any other brand. My main point in this review is that the gauge is right for frailing (at least for the way I frail - your mileage may vary). I tried light gauge strings and didn't like them... the sound was a bit hollow and they were too bendy and stretchy. I kept having the problem of accidentally pulling the 1st string off the side of the fretboard when playing up the neck. And the light gauge strings were so easy to bend that they would sort of mash together under my fingers when making certain chords, which would result in slight intonation problems. These medium gauge strings are just little bit stiffer and offer a little more resistance, and thus prevent both of those problems. And the sound of the highs (especially on the 1st string) is clearer and has more sustain.

I wanted to give these a shot because I play clawhammer banjo. Well I was very nicely surprised. These strings have a perfect tone to them and they play nicely. When I used up my first set I replaced them with my normal GHS strings and YUCK. The sound was so tinny. Just trust me on this. Give these strings a shot!!

I discovered Ernie Ball lightweight strings when I played coffee houses some 45 years ago. They had that extra "twangy" sound I was looking for folk music and were easy on the fingers. The .009 and .010 strings are a little prone to breaking, so DON'T OVERTIGHTEN THEM! If you are a little bit careful and use an electronic tuner, you shouldn't have any more problems than you would with any other strings. Time proven strings that perform really well and don't cost an arm and a leg.

I've always used Earthwood for my acoustic guitar, so when I started playing the banjo, I thought I'd try these first. They are of good quality, and have a very nice tone. Highly reccomend!

I used these to replace the factory issued strings on my Deering Goodtime, and the difference is enormous. They are very responsive and have a nice, clear tone. I recommend them to anybody using the clawhammer style.

I've used these strings exclusively for over 5 years now for live performance and recording. I play clawhammer and 3-finger style (rarely with picks), and have found that these strings ring deep and true on the low end, clear and sharp on the high, and overall provide a rich, sturdy tone, even when lots of old-time frailing is followed by a quiet waltz, for example. Highly recommended for open-back banjos! Hear these strings at: www.nategusakov.com, www.lasttraintozinkov.com

I only use Eanie Ball Earthwood strings on all my banjos and guitars. Once you do you'll never go back to another brand. I love them. They give the best earthy tones that I like.

I have tried a lot of brands for my Goodtime banjo. These strings were far superior to GHS and D'Addario. The only brand I have used that I liked any better was Elixr. I highly recommend starting with Earthwood Frailing strings as a reference before spending more loot on the Elixr.
