While I've only used it for one song so far, I'm incredibly impressed. I bought it to warm up my voice - an otherwise cold, dreary and lifeless affair - and it does just that. I can't tell you how many times I kept re-recording the same line; not because I messed up, but because I wanted to keep hearing my own voice through this thing.

I cranked up the input gain and barely opened up the output to record into my Zoom MRS 1044. Absolutely beautiful result. I've heard some reviewers say that this unit is best used as a subtle touch, but I like the full on tubey sound.

I bought this unit for $80 from a local music store. So for a little over half the price of a Presonus TubePre (and a fraction of the cost of most other mic pres) it fricken' rocks.

I haven't tried it with other instruments or even with other voices, but I'm thoroughly impressed with the results of what I bought it for. I will update the review later when I've used it for a wider variety of applications but for now, I highly recommend it.

*TIP I read this on some online forum; USE THE PHASE REVERSE when you are monitoring your voice through earphones while singing. This is because for some reason the sound vibrations in your skull that you hear conflict with the audio signal and you are more likely to sing slightly off-key. But if you use the phase reverse, it fixes this issue and you will sound like God. Peace, y'all!

One of the main reasons I choose this later model over the ART Tube MP Studio Original, was for the Output Protection Limiting (or OPL) to protect the hardware I was then connecting this device to, which is an ASUS XONAR Essence STX PCIe card, using it's 1/4" phone Line or Mic Inputs.

Using a ten year old standard Radio Shack PA microphone connected via XLR, I can get a crisp microphone sound instead of only getting mostly bass from the cheaper five volt computer electret microphones.

RS PA microphone connected via XLR to the ART preamp, and 1/4" balanced phone to the ASUS Xonar STX PCIe card 1/4" Line/Mic combo input. Using no microphone boost, with the microphone input selected within software.

For Voice Chat:
ART preamp settings: 100% Input Volume, Using +20dB in voice chat, Phase Reverse active, 50% Output Volume with Voice Neutral.
Linux or Windows Software settings: Microphone Volume at 100%, with no microphone boost.

For Recording:
ART preamp settings: 100% Input Volume, +20dB Deactivated, Phase Reverse active, 75% or 100% Output Volume with Voice Neutral.
Linux or Windows Software settings: Microphone Volume at 100%, with no microphone boost.

NOTE: Above I mentioned I was using the Microphone Input, by selecting the Microphone Input either within the operating system mixer settings or within Audacity. I have since switched from using the Microphone Input, and have now selected the Line Input as the selected recording source, within both the operating system mixer and Audacity. The ASUS Xonar STX PCIe card has combo Line/Microphone inputs, and when the Microphone line is selected, a relay switches/routes the input source through a cheaper electret 5v phantom powered (CMI9780) chip.

We have two Studio V3's. I have found that the LIMIT (marked LIMT on the dial for some reason) has a nice bass pass characteristic that suits my voice very well. We also use a Focusrite Voicemaster Pro and to be honest, whilst the Focusrite is very nice (especially the optical expander which is great for less than perfectly quiet recording studios) the ART Studio V3 sounds very nice. The range of valve (tube) voicings that this thing gives is good and it's a fun thing to have in the drawer and bring out when you need something a little different. Can also be used as a hand warmer if your studio is cold in winter. Our two units are very quiet -- I can't hear any noise on them at all -- but I have had some noise with them which we traced to triac switching noise being brought in on the house current so not the fault of the V3 at all. Use good cables, especially if using a ribbon mic and you should be OK. One of the nice things about the V3 is the limiting function. It really works well. It's really smooth and natural and works as a quasi compressor if you use it right. For the price this is a number of gizmos in one and it SOUNDS NICE! The build quality is good but it can do with some rubber feet to stop it sliding about. We got rubber feet from Radio Shack that did the trick. In the UK you can find suitable rubber feet at Maplin stores.

This is a really excellent mic preamp. I have used it in my project studio on every recording I've made since I bought it. I like that it has the phantom power feature I use my condenser mics with it all of the time and they sound even better with this preamp.

Picked this little guy up so I could start recording, so far I haven't had too many problems tracking vocals or guitar. It's a fun little piece of equipment, the 20dB boost button is a nice feature, as well as the limiter and tone selection. The phantom power switch is also something I really love about this preamplifier since my condenser mic requires it. It features an input and output volume control which is again, just another nice feature for how cheap this thing was, also love that there's both an XLR and 1/4 inch input and output jacks, I really like that for the idea of running this thing in my pedalboard circuit. My only complaint would really be with the tube itself, the tone is decent enough to get away with, but I'm looking to replace it very soon. While hooked up I noticed static/white noise in the background, it's not as noticeable once you play back a recording but it has distracted a few friends I've had over to do some work with enough. Not a deal breaker though, a better tube will only run about 20-40$ so it's not a big deal. I'm very satisfied and ART will definitely be a brand I look to experiment with again in the future. As far as service goes, it arrived exactly when estimated, perfectly on time no problems there.
