Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The Western Digital Caviar SE hard drive gives you 250 GB of storage in a package that is quiet, fast, and runs cooler than most hard drives on the market. Even at a rotational speed of 7,200 RPM the drive can maintain low operating temperatures and low power consumption. The 8 MB buffer also provides high performance caching for faster speeds and improved system functions.

This hard drive is as quiet as it is fast, with noise minimized to levels nearly below the human hearing threshold using WhisperDrive technology. Soft Seek technology is employed to minimize seek noise by streamlining read/write seek algorithms. All this means that your hard drive will operate efficiently and quietly while in use, allowing you to enjoy games, video, and music without the distraction of loud hardware.

The Caviar SE drive comes with Data Lifeguard Tools, a suite of software that works with the built-in Data Lifeguard technology to simplify the process of installation, drive management, and repair. Data Lifeguard continually monitors your system to help with shock protection, environmental protection, error detection and repair, and automatically finds, isolates, and repairs any detected problems. The built-in Shock Guard feature gives you shock and vibration protection to protect your data in case of high shock or sudden movement. These data protection enhancements add up to a more secure, reliable system without the worry.

Product Description

Western Digital's Special Edition hard drives are designed to maximize desktop computer performance for activities requiring high-performance storage such as computer gaming, digital video editing, and file server applications. Offering the largest capacities, the Western Digital's Special Edition family is equipped with an 8 MB buffer - the largest buffer available today in a desktop EIDE hard drive, delivering data to users faster than any hard drive in its class. The Special Edition hard drive provides a higher percentage of cache hits and significantly faster time to data than industry-standard 2 MB versions. Within the complex operations of hard drives, the buffer is used to hold the results of recent reads from the disk, and also to "pre-fetch" information that is likely to be requested in the near future. The use of an increased buffer improves the performance by reducing the number of physical accesses to the disk and allowing data to stream from the disk uninterrupted by mechanical operations.

3.0 out of 5 stars WARNING - not what the description says!, January 31, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The description for this product says "Full kit includes drive cables, installation and management software, and illustrated instructions". All I got was an OEM drive... just the drive with no cable, rails, software, instructions or anything else. I don't know if an underpaid stockboy just screwed up or what, but everyone should be aware.

I'm keeping it because I just wanted the bare drive anyway, but I wanted to warn others who might be counting on the additional items.

4.0 out of 5 stars Download Data Lifeguard Tools from WDC support first, July 28, 2007
By Chase "coloradodude_7" (Broomfield, CO United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Purchased this drive to replace a smaller 13GB slave unit (also a WD drive that had worked flawlessly for over 8 years but was unable to keep up with the storage demands of our new 7MP digital camera). The package contained only the bare bones drive unit itself, no documentation, no software, nothing else. That was fine for my case but could cause concern for some first-timers. I first just set the jumper on the new unit to the slave position, changed out the drives and restarted the system (Window XP Home). The new hardware detection ran OK and the new device showed up as operating correctly in Device Manager, but it was not visible in My Computer because it was not yet partitioned & formatted. After downloading the "Data Lifeguard Tools" program from the Western Digital support web site, and running the program to modify the registry for high-capacity drives, restart and partition/format process, all was well.

4.0 out of 5 stars No complaints with this drive, July 10, 2007
By Bruce Ensberg (Redmond, wa USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this drive to replace a smaller drive that was starting to make scary noises. The formatting, partitioning, and disk copy software worked as advertised, but the system didn't initially recognize it when I configured it as the master drive. I had to fiddle with the jumpers, but once I got that figured out it was fine.
