4.0 out of 5 stars Quiet, Fast, 3 yr Warranty, January 30, 2005
I have an aging win2k pro machine that has the C: drive on an 8 G partitian. The Sims did the computer in - we are constantly struggling with disk space. So, I bought this beauty and downloaded a wonderful utility called Casper (not the demo version, downloads.com). 2 hours after I opened the box, I had the computer booted off the new drive, using an exact copy of the old, but onto 30 G partitions. It went without a hitch! We didn't lose a single application or license key. If I'd known it was so easy, I would have done this a year ago.

The new drive is faster and quieter than the old, and I really like the 3 year warranty. Note that this is a bare drive in a box - not even any extra screws.

2.0 out of 5 stars Back up your data now!, July 9, 2006
By R. Sriram (Singapore) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this drive in late 2003, and it's gone through a moderate amount of use in a home environment since then. The positives first - though it has an 8MB buffer it is very fast, and can even stand its ground against some newer disks with larger buffers.

It does make quite a bit of noise and heats up a bit more compared to my older 40gig and 20gig WD's, and the newer seagates.

2.5 years after purchase, the drive started corrupting files like crazy. WD has tools on their site to check your disk status, and sure enough it was due for an RMA. When I checked the warranty status online, 6 months had mysteriously 'vanished' from my warranty period. The drive warranty had started 6 months before I'd purchased it! Anyway, it was still valid and they sent me a replacement very quick.

Still, this is my second WD drive to die, and I'm going with other brands from now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Purchase, April 14, 2009
By UncleTime (Mississippi) - See all my reviews
Too bad the Hard Drive I bought was the last of its kind offered. I would buy more. The price was great and the seller delivered quickly.
