About 20 years ago when I worked in a music store, we had one of these for guitar repair, restringing, inspection, setup, etc. I think this was the first "guitar workstation" available, and when it came to deciding which one to buy for my home, the choice was easy. I figured if it withstood the use in the store for the 7 years I worked there, (never had to replace it), then it would be good for occasional use at home. I noticed there were others on Amazon that cost less, and maybe they're the same thing, but I chose not to take the chance.

The workstation is nice . . . everything stores nicely in the tube, the mat doesn't slide around, and it takes only a second to set up. It's convenient enough that you'll use it every time you restring and clean, and it's gold if you've got to do any kind of setup or repair. You can place your guitar face up or face down, acoustic or electric, and have no worries about scratching your finish. Well worth the investment if you play anywhere near regularly because it should last you forever. The only challenge is probably finding a clear spot to put it to do your guitar work . . . I move my mouse and keyboard and use my desk, but a kitchen table or counter top would do nicely, too.

The danger of this class of item is that it sounds like a good idea to make life easier, but then gets stashed in the corner and forgotten about, (like one of those Food Saver things, or other little gadgets you buy with good intentions and never use). This, however, will not befall that same fate or collect any dust whatsoever . . . you will use it EVERY time you have to do something to one of your guitars and wonder why you waited so long to buy one.

I have had a fretrest for over 10 years. It has held the test of time. It is expensive, but given its longevity, totally worth it. Having it all stored in one unit (a tube) makes it very convenient because you can't lose pieces. I alternate which way I roll it up to reduce the "memory" in the foam. I use it every time I restring or work on my acoustics or electrics.
