I thought this would be the perfect product for protecting the wooden hoop on my bass drum. However, once you put the Hoop Guard on the bass drum hoop it becomes too thick to attach your bass drum pedal. I have a Tama Starclassic Maple drum kit (about 10 years old), and an older DW 5000 bass drum pedal (about 15 years old). I might be able to get a newer pedal that would fit my drum hoop with this guard attached, but that's not worth it unless I absolutely need a new pedal. Just a heads up if you're looking at this product.

I bought a used drum set and it came with this ugly metal hoop clamp which did not look aesthetically pleasing and it mounted with a screw! I took that ugly clamp off and cleaned the area. I was actually looking for one of those Tama hoop savers when I came across this Gibraltar unit. The Tama piece is nothing more than a thick sticker and only protects a small amount of the flat side of the hoop. It's common sense that the part of the hoop that takes the most abuse will be the edge. This drum hoop guard solves that problem because it goes slightly over the edge of the hoop.

I like this design because it is rubber and provides cushioning from any vibration or squeak that the pedal contact with the hoop might cause.

I have a black lacquered hoop and this unit matches perfectly. It will of course look good with any other color as it is the perfect size and disappears under the pedal.

Just make sure that before you install it, you clean the hoop thoroughly to remove any dirt or any type of wax residue otherwise the adhesive will not stick properly. First, I cleaned the area, then I placed the hoop guard on and held it tightly for a minute. So far, it has not come off. The adhesive is not the strongest so the cleaning is important and once you install it, don't try to take it off and try to reposition it as the adhesive will go away.

The unit is cheap protection and a good value at the price. Gibraltar makes another model if you want to use it with a metal hoop. This unit is for wood hoops.

EDIT: The adhesive on the bottom of the product is not very sticky. After repeated attachment/reattachment of the pedal, the hoop guard will come off. Right now, my hoop guard is just sitting on the hoop and my pedal is holding it there. If I take the pedal off, the hoop guard will fall off. I wish the adhesive was much stronger but you can always use your own adhesive.

You want to protect your bass hoop? You don't want to spend that much money? You want to have a backup? Buy this. It's simple and does the job. It doesn't protect the other side of the hoop so I've heard of people using this in combination with the metal protector that protects the other side, but for my needs, this is adequate.

This really does not provide any protection against pedal rash that I can see. It is far too thin to be of any value, not to mention it is in two pieces which leaves the front of the hoop exposed somewhat. I thought it was in a U shape and slid on to the hoop. I would not recommend this product. I ended up cutting a cheap rubber cell phone bumper case and made a much nicer protector that really works...it's easily removable... and fits in my DW pedal case.

The adhesive wore out and came off after about a month of use with very little travelling. Other than that, it does a good job of protecting the inside of the hoop but does nothing for the bottom/outside.

It seems a large issue with these rubber pads is that they do not come with an adhesive backing to them, and that they sometimes slip and are troublesome when trying to position under the pedal clamp as a result. My opinion? Perhaps that's a good thing, as many drummers (like myself) are very picky with what we put on our drums -- I can't remember how many times I've cursed previous owners as I stressed to remove gummy residues from my shells. Even resorted to grill brushes once when I was stripping old glue from a Ludwig concert bass drum. In retrospect, I believe having the option to adhere the pads or not outweighs the inconvenience of it having been not already applied. I ended up slapping some cuts of double-sided cushion tape on the bottoms of the protectors anyway, and so far, they work fantastically. Clean and simple!

The hoop guards I received had virtually no adhesive on them, or else the adhesive had dried up in storage/transit. I'm returning them to get a Pearl HPP2 Metal Hoop Protector for Wood BD Hoops.

It does the job...if you add a couple pieces of tape. I was really disappointed by how cheap this was, and for the price I would suggest finding an alternative way to protect your bass drum
