Top Customer Reviews

By Frank DeFelice on August 4, 2005
Mine did not sound like an expensive horn. The forked B-flat key was not adjusted properly. The overall tone was mediocre with the supplied mouthpiece. I had previously tried the Vintage R13, which sounded great and was TIGHT. The Prestige was a big disappointemnt. I returned it. My Prestige had the extra low E-flat key which was a nuisance. (Buying by mail is a tedious proposition.)

When the clarinet was first invented during the eighteenth century, it had had a fingering system namely dubbed the Albert, and the Albert clarinet fingering system consisted of thirteen keys. Later, in the nineteenth century, the instrument was further updated to a new fingering system namely dubbed the Oehler, and the Oehler happened to have twenty-seven keys. Lastly, in the twentieth century, the instrument was updated once more to a new fingering system namely dubbed the Boehm consisting of seventeen keys, and it was exactly the Boehm fingering system that had proven to be the most generally preferable, and, from thereon, the clarinet began to be manufactured under the Boehm fingering system while the Oehler and Albert remain hidden within antiquity. In order of historical accuracy, the Albert, Oehler, and Boehm fingering systems of the clarinet were made known under the German, Austrian, and French nationalities of origin, and it was exactly the French nationality that was responsible for having paved the way to over-popularity for the instrument. The Boehm fingering system was invented by Auguste Buffet, whose last name become over-popularized through the clarinet manufacturer of the modern day, “Buffet Crampon”. The Buffet Crampon manufacturer began in 1900 at the turn of the century, and, from thereon, the beginning of the clarinet manufacturing company was to eventually over-popularize all other companies that manufactured the same instrument.

From 1900 to 1955, various clarinets of various pitches, from the highest E flat to the lowest B flat, were manufactured by Buffet Crampon and were mostly labeled “pre-R13,” and the label was a foreshadowing of what was to come in 1955, whence the original “R13” was invented.
