I purchased this to replace a submersible heater that was overheating the tank despite the lowest setting. Right away, I could tell that the Hydor was well constructed and made from much better materials than any other heater I have ever used. The installation instructions were a bit vague, but its not a very complicated system. Once I got it going, I was very impressed! It does keep the temperature very even and consistent according to the setting. It's also nice since its hidden away behind the stand completely out of sight. One less piece of equipment in the tank! Well worth the extra price.

*UPDATE - Demoted this to two stars. It had been keeping temperature pretty consistent for weeks, but today I went down to find all my fish were dead. The temperature had gone up to 102 degrees without warning. I checked the heater and the setting hadn't changed. I'm checking to see what kind of warranty is offered!

*UPDATE - Hydor did honor the warranty and replace this product. Unfortunately, I noticed a temperature spike once again with the replacement. This time I did manage to catch it before it killed any more fish. While this item heats very well, the thermostat is COMPLETELY useless and unreliable. One commenter on this review suggested using a separate thermostat (Hydroset was the recommendation) which I think is exactly what I need.

Installed on 8 May, 2014. So far so good and hoping for the best. I've read some reviews of the thermostat failing and over heating the water. Almost didn't buy it because of these reviews. however, I really like the idea of not having another item in my small 29 Gal tank, so I went for it. Besides, the same problem can happen with traditional heaters too. So far, I don't think my water has fluctuated even a full degree since installed 48 hrs ago. I will certainly update if any issues arise.

Note: it is intended for 5/8" inside diameter tubing so some DIY'ing may be necessary to mate to your system. I definitely did for my Fluval 206. The Fluval must use metric sized hose, because it wouldn't go over the 5/8" barbs and fit loose over 1/2" barbs. I ended up using a hose mender for 1/2" i.d. hose and clamping the heck out of both the Fluval tubing and the 5/8" i.d. vinyl hose I bought to mate this thing up. Had a tough time getting the Fluval tubing tight enough to stop leaking because of the ribbed construction, but got it to work. I look at it every time I pass to check for leaks. So far so good. See pics in the user pic section if interested.

This ETH-300 has been working great for almost a year now. I have it hooked up to the Hydroset thermostat in my 90g male Peacock Cichlid tank. Its plumped inline to my Fluval FX5 using some 1" x 5/8" barbs. It keeps my tanks temp steady at 79°, every once in a while I'll set it to 80°. I love the digital display.

Nothing else to say...it works and works well. Just make sure you get a thermostat to hook the heater up to just just as added protection in case of a heater failure.

I am a long time fish keeper now specializing in discus. I have owned just about every brand of heater in my over thirty years in the hobby. No heater I have even owned is comparable to this one. It is quite simply far better than any other aquarium heater. Easy to set, accurate, holds temperatures extremely stable. It must be used with a canister filter which I notice the Informational Blurb does not include, but if you run a canister filter on your aquarium this is the one to own.

This is the best heater for any tank (sized appropriatly) using a canister filter. Simply split the return line and install the heater. No extra equipment in the tank, no electrical connections in the tank. I noticed some reviewers are complaining of fittings being too small. Pay attention to what you are ordering! There are two diferent 200 watt models; one with 1/2" (12mm) fittings and one with 5/8" (16mm) fittings (all measurements are for inner diamenter). My canister uses 1/2" line so the 1/2" fittings work perfectly. I imagine the same thing is true for the 5/8" model.

I bought one of these to use with a Fluval 306 canister filter and 50 gallon tank. Connecting it to the filter was not straight forward since Fluval uses ribbed hoses. I ended up using a clear 5/8" PVC hose from the filter to the intake of the heater and then used the rubber connector and the ribbed hose on the discharge to the tank. So far in nearly 6 months of use this has worked flawlessly with no leaks.

I can't say enough about how well the heater works as far as controlling the tank temperature. I have a digital thermometer and it never fluctuates more than +/- .1 degrees no matter what the room temperature is. You do hear a slight click when the the heater turns on or off which means they use a mechanical relay to control the voltage to the heating element. I like this as most heaters use a solid state relay (think transistor) which is usually the reason heaters fail in the "on" state and fry the tank, SSR's almost always fail "on".

If you have a canister filter you can't go wrong with one of these heaters.
